The term wet is to refer to

The term wet is to refer to one that is still nursing or with piglets around. Despite everything you read about the out of control scourge of wild hogs and needing to kill them all it's a little different out there in most places.

They have become a cash crop that is managed and controlled pretty well. And although there are lots of them in some areas they don't seem to be spreading as fast as all the shows say they are.

Interesting...

I guess it all depends on where you hunt as well. I was on private land and land owner was a cattle rancher and owned land as well used for logging. I also guess since it was deprivation permit we were allowed to take whatever hogs we wanted even with them still nursing. Good to know for when I hunt for future reference if I am not hunting on a deprivation type permit.

Also...

Forgot to mention if I haven't already, thanks for the knowledge of what wet sows mean. I am new to hunting and want to gain knowledge to make the right decisions when hunting game and not be the hunter that everyone despises.

Exactly what Wade said.  Kill

Exactly what Wade said.  Kill a mom with piglets, you may kill 8 pigs (All the piglets too) if she's still nursing them.  Cash crop out here in this state.  Second most popular big game animal only to Deer.

Great story

Hey Sean, That was a great read, thanks for the article & pics. Imagine all the enjoyment you would have missed if you'd connected on day one. Are you going to get the skull bleached from the boar. I'm hoping I get a nice sized one in January so I can get the skull done myself. Your description of the hunt and hunting area sounds vastly different from our hunts in Georgia. Just goes to show you how adaptable those hogs can be.

Ed

Yeah, it was funny.  Reminded

Yeah, it was funny.  Reminded me more of deer hunting.  They are very dependant on mast crops, so it's alot of hunting in hardwoods and creek bottoms.

As for the skull, I am going to skin it tomorrow, and then I have a guy lined up who has somke beetles.  He's agreed to do that for free, as long as I pass the word along about his business.  Then, I am not sure.  I like the looks of the Metallized Skulss, if you've seen them.  Can even do it yourself with a can of metallic spraypaint from Home Depot and a little practice.  Or, maybe just leave it white.  I'll know more when I get it skinned.

It won't be very white from

It won't be very white from the beetles. If you go that route and leave it you need to use peroxide on it. Gel from beauty supply store in a gallon is about $12. It's called 40 volume,40 being the strongest. soak it good for a day or two and let it dry in the sun.

40 means 4x the regular 3% strength making it 12%

Bleach turns them yellow by the way.

Well Well Well

Bout time you smashed a pig, you were making us californians look prissy, LOL
Good story also, thats just about how a CA hog hunting trip goes. That ranch has just about everything on it, Elk, Deer, Antelope, hogs, bear. This is the best time to hunt for boars when is cool out, in the summer they feed at night.
I use to save the fat off of about five hogs then make the sausage so it wood 100% pure wild, other wise they add commercial fat, which is still fine. I like Spicy Portugese and Maple sausage.

That sounds like good

That sounds like good sausage. I had some of the Italian last night, and wow, it was good.  Can't believe how tasty this critter is, even though people were telling me he would be "rank"..... lol

Their loss, I guess......
