My last hunt for the year

Got out yesterday for my last hunt this year.  It was a nice crisp 40 degrees, barely a breath of air.  Saw some fresh sign on the way in.

Had two come in a few minutes after sunset, about 20 minutes before I had to stop.  Couldn't tell what they were, and spikes are off limits here, so i couldn't risk a shot without being sure.  Never really gave me a chance anyway, as they came by at 45 yards for about 2 seconds in my lane.  Never got the bow up.

Anyway, I said on another site, I think God may be acting like the Casinos, and their looser slots that are by the doors (Not proven, just seems like it).  They give you a little tease at the end of your trip, just to guarantee you will be back next year for more punishment... lol

Don't Give Up!

Man, I don't remember how many years I hunted deer with a bow before I finally got one.

I do remember making a lot of mistakes, and it wasn't until I had access to some very good property that I finally got one.

After a few years of hunting there, the property was sold, so I had to look elsewhere. I had access to over 500 acres of property that was part cropland and part woodland with a creek running through part of it. I applied what I had learned from the other place and soon began taking one or two every year.

Over the years I have had to hunt different properties, and after a while, you kind of get to know what to look for - what kind of place is good for deer and where is best to put your stand.

I'm sure that what I have learned here in Michigan wouldn't be worth 2 cents out there in CA.

If you could get someone to mentor you, I'll bet that you will be getting deer on a regular basis.

Try to see if there's a local sportsmen's club in your area to locate people who know the ropes out there.

Good luck - - and don't give up!

Well, it's not about

Well, it's not about mentoring for me.  I am confident that I know almost as much as people who ge them every year.  I have been hunting since I can remember, which is over 30 years.

My problem is commitment.  Where I live, it's 78 miles from my stand, one way.  That means that I don't get alot of time to put in to scouting, let alone hunting.  I know where the deer are, I just need to put in my time.  But, with the distance, and a wife and 2 kids under 5 years old, it's hard to do right now.  I just go to the same spot, only 5 times a year on average.  I am not in the woods enough to see if the deer have moved, the woods have "changed", etc.

Put me some place where I am 5 minutes from hunting, and I will put my knowledge against most people, and be successful most of the time.  I hope that doesn't sound cocky, cause I may not have alot of leg to stand on, especially with my limited success.  I just feel that's the truth behind my deerless seasons....Time in the woods, period.... Wink
