My last good buck

Back on Nov. 19, '06, opening day of General Deer season, the local hunt club kept their deer dogs off my property. This was a miracle in itself. As a result of a "peaceful" hunt in one of my tree stands, I had this 14-pointer walk up to within bow range of my stand. Of course, I was not hunting with a bow, and dropped the deer with a load of #1 buckshot. The deer are spooky this year, due to being chased by dogs almost on a daily basis. As a result, no luck since I took this one.

Thanks. Looks like this season is going to be a dry one for me. I've been seeing some does that are staying in the swamp. They will come to the edge, but won't come out into the woods. They are spooky. I think the only chance for a decent deer now, is to watch the swamp. Might catch a buck sneaking around. Other than that, I'm about done. And incidently, the ONLY days that I have seen deer is when there were NO DOGS disrupting the hunt.

the 14 pointer in VA

I live about 45 mins. North east of Richmond. I need deer dogs to run on my property just to see them as I stated in another post.

Looks like you do not. I have two dogs, one bird dog & a black lab.
Family pets....Deer run by them all the time....they will only sight chase them--thats how house dogs (most) run deer--by sight.

nice buck! Thumbs up

Curious as to why you do not see deer when the hunting dogs are on your land?

This should be a plus...

Thanks. Per Red Neck's question about why I don't see deer when the dogs are on my land.......I don't know, other than the fact that the ones bedding in the swamp are afraid to move unless the dogs "step" on them. I sometimes see the deer that is being run by the dogs, but it's usually a doe or small buck. When the big bucks get in the swamp, they won't come out. And another possibility is the number of dogs released at a time. It's not uncommon for the club to have 20 dogs in the woods. Younger dogs aren't running, but are under your feet when you are trying to hunt. Other dogs are "cold-trailing", because the deer has temporarily fooled them in the water. Mature deer WILL NOT move if they perceive a threat. The later in the season, the more "quiet" time it takes for the deer to be confident enough to move. If deer are planning to feed, and they hear deer dogs, they simply won't feed. At least that's my opinion after studying this for many years.

Well if I had bucks like that on my property, I would have to change my tune on the dogs......That truly is a nice buck. Did ya mount it?

I only mounted the horns. I killed a "monster" back in '89, and had it mounted, along with several other mounts. Had them all on the wall at a friend's hunting cabin, with a couple of mounted fish. Flying squirrels got into the cabin one summer and ruined everything. I got my taxidermist to mount the "monster' horns on a plaque, because he couldn't save the entire mount. That deer had 10 good points, and would have had more, but it had "antler rot", caused by parasites while still in the velvet. It had a 25" outside spread. Here's a picture of what's left......
