Re: My first goat thought I would share

Thanks - I am looking forward to it. In addition to the goat tag I'll have a wolf, muie deer and black bear. I'll focus on the mountain goat but if I am sucessful and have time left in my 10 day hunt then I'll try to take a mule deer or black bear. For the wolf, it is just a matter of stumbling upon one so if I do I will take it at any time.

Re: My first goat thought I would share

Get in shape??????????????????? I hunt whitetail and turkey and don't have any problems so it shoudln't be a problem to hunt some goat in the mountain.

Haha....just kidding of course. I booked the trip about six months ago and I've been working out pretty hard since then. I've dropped about 14 pounds, ran 3 5ks and hike with my backpack loaded with sandbags.

I plan to do more hiking with a heavier pack to really prepare. Running and lifting is helping me with a good base, but it isn't the same as hiking with the pack and boots on hills.

I'm doing a 10K next weekend. I do the races because they are short term goals that keep me motivated. I may also do a triathalon this June. Just little carrots to keep me fresh and moving forward. I'd like to lose about another 5 pounds.

And I plan to hit the rifle range to hone my shooting skills too. I've got some ammo loaded and ready to go so I plan to do a lot of shooting this summer and fall in preparation.

I did a bear hunt last spring in wyoming near the Idaho border. Had to hike up and down the mountain at 7000 feet and the first couple of days really kicked my butt until I got used to the altitude. It also taught me a bit about climbing. I would hunt each evening at the bottom of this canyon. The climb out was straight up almost (well maybe not straight up).

I learned that if I paced myself I could keep going without stopping, but if I got my pace too fast I'd have to stop. Plus I learned to strip off the heavy coat before the climb. So the short answer is yes, I am preparing.

Re: My first goat thought I would share

Ran 10 miles today and then lifted weights.

Tomorrow I hope to swim, bike and then hike 5 miles with the back pack loaded. The first two are iffy, but I will definitely backpack.
