My first elk

I shot my first elk last fall in west texas, low fence, 4X5 bull, well it was a 4x4 with a spur for the 5th point so im counting it.........nice when you can make your own rules you know. I shot him with a weatherby .270, 150 gr. soft point.
If anyone is interested i have more about him in the photo's and tall tales.

You'd be surprised how many free ranging, low fence, elk there are in the uvalde area. Lots of huge 10 and 20 thousand acre ranches with elk on them. There are so many high fence (8 feet) ranches in texas that its a real pain in the rear. Huge amounts of exoctic game in south texas and the edwards platue area. I have heard in south texas they have several 50,000 - 100,000 acre private ranches with them as well.

I think elk meat tastes alot like deer meat. i thought it was gonna taste more like beef, just way too lean. Love the backstrap and the chili meat. I made a raost i thought was real good too.
