My first cutom rifle

For 10 years now I told myself I wanted a maple stocked .264 winchester magnum for mule deer, and I finally decided to build one. I bought a Remington 700 ADL for 300 bucks at Wal-Mart last may and then started compiling the parts. I had a gunsmith in Colorado install the 27" .264 Lilja barrel, and blueprint the action. I also bought an aluminum floor plate to eventually engrave, but I haven't decided what yet. Next up was to Teflon coat the barrel and action. All the while I had been sanding and filing the stock. I am 90% done, just a few more coats of finish and a recoil pad, but you can see the progression in the pictures, I am extremely happy with the results, considering I don't know what I am doing.
Enjoy- and lets see your custom jobs too!

Nice work so far. What kind of optics are you going to put on her?

I'm running out of money so I have a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40 arriving Monday. I'd really like something even nicer, but that will certainly do the job this year. One of the reasons I went with this scope was that it didn't have an adjustable objective, which i think is kind of ugly. I also have Talley Lightweight one piece ring/bases which I absolutely love.

exbiologist,

That wood has such a beautiful grain! My compliments.

I wish I were younger and still 'building' guns. I have a Westerner but its heavy o my old body. I am shooting a Kimber Montana 270 WSM and a M70 Classic in 7mm WSM that I fitted a Bansner stock to.

Lets hear how it shoots when the scope comes.

One of my very first rifles was an 03 chambered for 308 and stocked in Flame Burly Maple. It was beautiful. Unfortunately I was young and now it's gone! Love those Maple stocks!!

That was actually a while back, I was bumping it for some other guys just to show off. She's a kick butt shooter. I've gotten sub .33 inch groups with 100 gr Ballistic Tips that I plan for using on antelope, and half inchers with 140 Partitions and Speers. I took two elk and deer with her last fall with the Partitions.
Then I got stupid, and decided I wanted to seat my bullets out further, so had her rethroated. Ruined the accuracy, so I had to redevelop all my loads, and she's back to her good ways with added velocity.
