My First Black Bear in New Sweden, Maine

I have been a New Jersey resident all my life. I have had my hunting license since 1989. Never have I gotten a deer. In August of this year (2004) My fiance and myself and a few other guys went to New Sweden, Maine. For me it was my first big game hunt. We went for black bear. We went with a guide service, Auntie's Cabin. I did everything I could to keep my confidence up. The first day of the hunt was August 30, 2004, Monday. I went out to my tree stand around 3pm and sat for a while when all of a sudden here he came! What an adrenalin rush! Then he turned around and walked out. My heart sank. 5 minutes later he came back in! it was 7pm. I took my shot, (Shot him with a 20 guage Remington 870 express Magnum, used Brenneke 2 3/4 Mag load slug.) He ran about 40 feet and dropped! He was 373 lbs! Not bad for my first big game hunt on the first night no less. As far as I know I still have the biggest bear in that town for the 2004 season. Im hoping there is a bear hunt next year to go to. That was the best hunting experience that I have ever had. Thank you Leonard and Jim. that is one experience I will never forget as long as I live.
here is my web page where you can get the link to the guide service that we used and see more pictures on his website. yes I am a female!

I guess my big question is "Do you like the taste of Bear meat now?"

Congratulations on the take. What are you going to do with the beast?

Love the meat! To me it tastes like roast beef. His paws were so big I dont have a heart to make a rug, gotta mount him to show off those huge paws! Just hoping they have bear hunting next year, will drop everything to go again. Loved the experience as well as the scenery. Thank you Big smile

Thank you..Being a female I always heard the guys say "what a rush" and always wondered what could be a rush? it comes out and you shoot it. Well let me tell you, I now know what they were talking about! No words could explain the "rush" I had when that bear stepped out! It made me shake like hell!! Had to get some self control and real quick! ha! wow what a feeling it was.

Congrats DEH on a nice bear. Nice to see a lady in the field harvesting them bears. They are my favorite animal to hunt here in Idaho. My wife also got her first this fall.

Keep it up. The bears need to be thinned out anyways. My wife likes hunting but she doesnt like the smell of bears and antelope as she thinks they stink. I cant smell so they dont bother me.LOL That is a heck of a bear you got.

I honestly dont remember smelling anything! Guess it was the excitement! I had a few people tell me there are a few old timers that have been hunting bear for over 20 years and havent gotten one that big. Kinda boosted my ego a little! Big smile Now I gotta get a bigger one!!!!

Never doubt yourself on going bigger. I never doubt my ability to hunt mule deer and getting bigger. I believe you will if hold out and wait for mister big.
