My early morning buck

Today was the opening day for hunting seaon here, me and my friend and his dad went out, my friend armed with a .223 mini-14, me with a Browning 270 and his father with a ruger 7mm rem mag. I went in to the bush on this ridge while they went to the bush line, they saw a gigantic buck (5x5) running into the bush, his dad came back and my friend stayed there, we saw the buck come into the field and i went prone and took a shot aiming about 1 inch high or so, it was standing looking around with itrs chest facing me, i took a shot and hit it through the neck and it went down. It was standing at about 450 yards on a hill. The landowner (my friends dad) said it was the bigest buck hes seen in this area in the last 15 years. Big smile Big smile PICtures to come.

First off Congrats on a job well done. Secondly what was friend armed with the .223 hunting coyotes. Any respectful hunter would know better than to take a caliber such as .223 tothe deer woods.

I consider .243 to be bare minimum for hunting whitetail. I seriuoslty doubt if your friend was faced with the shot that you were faced with that it would have been a success. Maybe you should lone him one of your big bores

Please send pics

I hope his friend wouldn't try a 450 yd shot with that gun but it will kill a deer and has killed many within its limits..........Thats why they ARE legal to use.

223 are legal in some provinces (any centrefire rifle), illegal in others (greater than .23 cal).

If I read the post correctly, the 450yd shot was made with a .270 not the .223. And from an (sounds like) unhuried prone position with a rest. If you know can make it - go for it..

Good shot man.

My friend and me have both killed many a deer with his .223, The only thing is you have to be under 100 yards if you want a one shot kill, anything over that we either leave alone or if we have a bigger gun wwe pull that out.
