My bear.

Here's a pic of the bear I took June 7, 2008. It's my first bear - a boar, ~ 3 years of age, and weighing ~ 200 lbs.
My only regret about that day is that the darn mosquitoes had me eaten alive. We rushed the whole process of paunching the bear and packing him out so we could save ourselves from the little beasts. If you look closely you can see the whitish coloured pecks around the bear - those are mosquitoes by the thousands.
My wife accompanied me that morning to replenish the bait. She said she had a good feeling we were going to see a bear - of course I just laughed at that. I brought in 2 buckets of donuts (which you see to my left). I went back about 25 yards to my ATV to retrieve the meat scraps, and when I turned around he was in front of me walking to the donuts. It's no joke - bears truly do just appear out of nowhere. Very silent, to say the least. In reflection, I'm certain the bear was no farther than 10-15 feet from my wife and I when we went to the site from the path the first time. He was undoubtedly just waiting for us to turn our backs so as he could raid the buckets. Now tell me that bears don't watch for the one that feeds them...

I use a Savage 30-06; 180 grain Remington bullet; 1 shot placed behind the shoulder, but the bear moved forward as I shot, which landed more in the bear's side. Must have been a sufficient shot, most likely from sheer impact, as the bear collapsed only ~ 20 feet away. When I went to track the animal, there wasn't even a blood trail. The bear seemed to have gone down even before the bleeding started. So, I was satisfied that it was a humane and ethical shot/kill.

My bear.

Nice bear, congrats!

Now I just have to say something about the bait. I know a lot of guys bait them but just where do bears find donuts in the wild??? Kind of like cat fishing, my favorite baits are chicken livers, what ever started that? Do bears prefer dunkin' donuts or krispy kreme? Big smile

if you get to the bait and find a bear eating donuts, can you really shoot one with white powder on its face? I wonder what bears drink with their donuts, coffee? Yes

Now I know bears sometimes eat fish so I wonder how a jar of power bait would work! Laugh
