Muzzleloader Hunting in unit 55

Myself and 3 friends are planning to hunt unit 55 in colorado next fall during the muzzleloader season. One in our group has hunted here before but I am hopeing to find out as much as I can about the area. Such as how rough of terrain (I am a flatlander Missouri), elk numbers and what are the chances of a first timer drawing an elk tag Thanks

You can get a cow tag without

You can get a cow tag without points for ML season. The either sex tag will take some points.

The terrain is easy to very difficult. It just depends how far you want to get away from the crowds.

If your hunting partner has hunting the unit before. he should be able to answer all your questions. As for the statistics. They're all available on the DOW web site.

Colorado DOW Link

Here is the link to the Colorado DOW - http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/PlanYourHunt/Pages/PlanYourHunt.aspx...

My advice is to really delve into this web sight and also speak to the local DOW office for more info.

Welcome to BGH, always nice

Welcome to BGH, always nice to see new folks on here. As Still Hunter said unit 55 is a huge unit and the terrain can be rolling hills to peaks well over timber line. Roads vary from paved highways to serious 4x4 trails only. I would talk with the guy who hunted the area before and if he did any good I would go to that area. Use the link Retired2hunt gave you for all your stats and use the map atlas on the Colorado DOW web site. It is a great map of the roads, aerial and topo. Most folks would consider unit 55 high country, so if you're not in good shape you have a year to work on that.
