Muzzle loading unit 40 colorado

Well i drew my tag and now i'm reaching out for advice!
Since the majority of the area is private and Glade park is only 12 sq miles any tips on where i stand a good chance of harvesting a nice bull? I'm not afraid to walk but access to the blm land seems limited. Since this is my first muzzle season any advice would be appreciated. I have hunted in CO for 30years and have taken many elk but no trophies a B&C would be nice but so would any bull over 300. This time of the year are they still up high or can they be found at the lower elevations with the pinion and junipers? Any drainages that might be good and access to them would be great.

98Fatboy, first off welcome to BGH ! Congrats on drawing your tag. Big smile The elk on Glade Park during that time of the season will be anywhere from the top of the NF to the bottom of the BLM. They should be screaming thier heads off and reasonably easy to locate, but some seasons are different each year .

Let me know what type of country you would rather hunt in, the NF or down in the lower country, the BLM. And I will PM you and try and help you out. I've already been helping several people out in the same unit and I am not wanting to put any of you guys in the same areas, so let me know how you like to hunt and what kind of terrain you like to hunt and I will try to help you out . Good luck and good hunting !

Elkkill06 thanks for the welcome! Thumbs up Basically i'm looking for an area with the fewest huntersif thats the nastiest country so be it! It seems like the majority of the hunters will be in the NF so maybe the BLM is a better choice. I will be hunting on my own maybe with a freind from Montrose on the weekends as he didn't draw his archery tag. I will no have horses but i will have my ATV. If i get on some big bulls late in the evening i will spend the night on the ground if need be! My biggest concern will be getting the meat out quickly with temperatures during this season, i assume i will be boning the elk out in the field to get it to the cooler faster.
As i said i'm not afraid to walk and i will be up to scout a couple times befpre the season. As the wait for these areas increase i will be staying the entire season if needed. Also do you know how many archers hunt this area? Most of the archers i know don't hunt during the muzzle loading season.

I talked to Tony the game warden today for the area and he gave ma a little insight to the area he hunted 5 years ago! However i still look forward to your reply Elkkill06! This is the most excited i have been for a hunt in a long time. Do anyone know any landowners that may be willing to charge a small trespass fee to reach land not easily accessable. I will be traveling several times these next few months do do some scouting. Im sure my GPS will have an abundance of way points after that!

As far as the landowners there elk are gold mines and I don't know of one that will let you pay a "small fee" to go through there property. I have relatives that wont let me on there property to hunt on top by the 2V Ranch, they just make too much money. As far as the number of hunters hunting archery in unit 40 in 2008, deer hunters 90, elk hunters 111, muzzy deer hunters 42, muzzy elk hunters 109. And most the archery hunters I know, including myself, have some of our best luck during muzzy season. I hope this helps.
