Muzzle Loader Season is Here

Well Just got done packing the last of the gear and now waiting for the wife to get off work so we can hit the road. Plan on making it to Rifle tonight then first thing in the am head up into our camp. Don't want to try and set up in the dark but sure is nice to get 4 of the 6 hours of driving down tonight. Get into camp about 9-10 then set up. Always nice to be set up the day before so you can relax and get a good nights sleep before getting into the woods just before light.

Good luck to all that are headed out this weekend.

I went looking at the area

I went looking at the area that I plan on going on the opening this morning.  I saw a few deer with one small buck, three elk, a cow and two calfs, and one bear.  But all this was from a road just checking out the open meadows so once I get into the trees doing some hiking I should find a few more.

If you are headed to Rifle just be aware that Glenwood Canyon is a beast right now.  They are doing construction on the west bound lanes and have it down to two lanes from the tunnels to past No Name, at least it was that way a week ago when I went through it.

Good luck on your hunt.

As you said the canyon was

As you said the canyon was a mess but better than the road we hunt on. Got into camp great and set up with no issues. Opening day was hot, 85 plus at 9300 feet and we did not do much that day. Wife and I walked up on a doe and forky. Wife watched the forky and doe then turned and said something to the tune of "they were close and that was cool". I told her she was right but the rifle on her shoulder is not for decoration and she had a doe tag to fill. She just started to laugh, shook her head and said that was the goof up of the year. By the way the doe was maybe 12 yards away broad side. Next morning was way better and the bulls where talking. We saw a set of elk legs which as they moved turned out to be 4 sets. We set up and here comes Curly, Moe, Larry and Shemp, all spikes. Nothing we can do so down the road we go. Followed the talk some more which lead us to a ridge line. As we walked up I saw a set of ears and told the wife to get ready. The lead cow crested the ridge and bang, the wife drilled her perfect. Cow turned and ran down hill about 40 yards and wedged herself between two big downed aspens. To say the least it was a challenge to quarter her and get her out. Shot her about 1035 and finally got her back to camp (1.97 miles) at 8PM. Next day was a bit of a relax day but I did hunt the afternoon only seeing on 3x3 buck. About 430 the rain started, light at first but increased and by 6Pm it was raining hard. Got back to camp a bit wet but figured just hunt the next day. Well the rain never stopped all night and at first light we could see the road was a muddy mess with a river running in each track. We knew right then it was time to pack up and get out of Dodge. Packed in the rain, drove out in the rain and it was a mess. Took almost 1 1/2 hours to go 4 miles in the soup and mess. Finally got into town and took $20 at the car wash to clean the truck and trailer or at least most of it. Heard the new forecast once we had cell service and prediction was for rain to continue thru Friday. We made the right choice to get off the hill. Son works in Meeker and said it rained pretty much all Tuesday thru Friday, again right choice to leave but still hard to do when you are in elk and have unfilled tags. Well cow is processed, burger made, sausage made and clean up completed. All in all a good trip but maybe could have been better.

Just remember a bad day

Just remember a bad day hunting is better than the best days in the cities.

I know what you mean on the blue elk tag soup or salad.  I had one at 50 yards last Sunday and took the shot and down she went.  The only problem was that my buddy had already shot her and I just put the finishing touch on her, but I get some backstraps out of her anyway.

At least your bride knows how to put meat into the freezer, even if she doesn't like to shoot female deer. Evil!

I myself didn't tag anything here in Colorado.  I had chances as smaller bucks but nothing worth taking a shot at.  The only elk I had a chance to shoot at was the one that my buddy had already hit.  I just didn't know it at the time and figured that he was shooting at another one, but at least we got that one.

I am leaving in the morning for my ML hunt in the Book Cliffs of Utah.  After waiting 14 years to draw the tag it should be a fun hunt.  I am planning on staying there the whole hunt or until I get the buck that I want.  There are some real nice ones over there if I can just find them.  The rains should put them into the migration mode if I read the cards right.  After the ML hunt I'll hang around over there for the rifle spike elk hunt.  The Books are open to that so we can do some scoutting while I am hunting deer.  My bigest gripe is that the Utah chucker hunt doesn't open up until next Saturday so I'll have to bite my toung when I run into them.
