Muzzeloader Questions(Colorado)

I am new to Colorado and have been told the use of sabots is illegal in Colorado. I believe the use of powered scopes is also illegal. Is it possible to use a red dot scope with no magnification or is that also illegal because it uses a battery? Also, what units will give me the best chance of drawing with no bonus points?

How many seasons are there for muzzleloader in Colorado? Would I have a better chance applying for a cow tag my first year in draw?

No optical sights of any sort are allowed. The regs specifically state only open or iron sights and prohibit any kind of sighting device using batteries or electronic gear also.
You have almost no chance of drawing a muzzleloader bull tag your first year. There is only on muzzleloader season, 9 days long in mid september. You are much more likely to draw a cow tag your first year.

One more thing to consider when applying is list a bull tag as your first choice and then a cow tag for your second choice. Like Exbiologist said you likely won't pull the bull tag, but you'll likely get the second choice cow and get a preference point for next years bull tag. Many units for muzzleloader only require one point to pull a bull tag.

Do you have the same odds of drawing a cow tag as second choice as you would if it is selected as first choice muzzleload? The goal this year is to get to go and learn about elk hunting. Which way would I have a the better odds of being drawn: 1st choice Bull Muzzleload, 2nd Choice Cow Muzzleload or 1st choice Cow Muzzleload? Thanks!

Your odds are virtually gauranteed if you want a first choice cow tag, but of course you can't earn a preference point to have a better shot at the bull tag next year.

exbiologist,

what do you think the odds are for drawing a second choice cow? i assume that draw is the leftover cow tags from the first choice draw?

Re: Muzzeloader Questions(Colorado)

Last year was 60% of the 2nd choice applicants drew the statewide muzzy cow tag . HOWEVER, this year will be totally different with no more statewide muzzleloader tags. I believe the List B units will be in higher demand for cow tags and the list A units will be in lesser demand. If I were to guess, I'd say that if you put in for a list A cow tag (that means you can only have one of that type of tag. All bull or either sex tags are List A, some cow tags are list A. List B means you can have two elk tags if at least one tag is list B, and they are always cow tags) with a second choice in a unit that was part of the former "statewide" tag, you stand a very good chance of drawing it.

If I apply for a 1st choice Bull and and 2nd choice Cow and don't draw either, how much does the prefrence point cost me $25 or the full license price? The CO website is confusing on this. Thanks!

The cost if you do not draw and want a preference point it will cost you $28.00. $25.00 for the point and the $3.00 application fee. So you would need to send the DOW $549.00 to get into the draw and if you do not draw you will get a refund check of $524.00 And if you draw a cow tag then the refund will be $298.00. This is presuming that you are a nonresident.

Cow tags have gone up to $354, so shouldn't the refund be more like $162 if drawn?

So, its only if you apply for a point for first choice and are not drawn for your second choice that you must pay full price as a nr for the point? I am reading this in the guide book under Elk Preference Point Hunt Code.
