I went to Newfoundland several years ago for a combo hunt. I went with Owl's Nest Lodge out of Gander in October. I took two caribou and a young moose, and never saw the stumble on black bear. I would not recommend getting that tag for a fall hunt. The guide said that with all the berries out, it was very unlikely we would see one and he was right. We saw 1 day old pile of scat. We hunted the interior southwest of Buchans, close to Grand Lake. Caribou numbers were good, moose few (3 seen). We actually saw some local moose hunters next to Grand lake. I lost one day to impenetrable fog out of the 5 days. There was a good deal of walking. Weather was in the 40-50 range, with frost at night. Bring layers of clothing, knee high rubber boots that are comfortable (if such exist). I carried a .300 magnum with 180 gr corelokts. My shots on caribou were 70 and 120 yards. The moose was 365 yards. I have read that Deer lake has good hunting also. Do not carry your ammo in the gun case because the Canadian police at the airport will have a stroke (it is illegal there). My caribou hides are beautiful and plush (like I need heat in
South Texas!!). I think a .270, 7mm, or .30-06 would suffice for these game also. 20 rounds was sufficient to bring.The remote cabin was ok as was the food.

We book for an outfitter in Newfoundland that I can recommend to you. They have great populations of both moose and woodland caribou and a great success rates on both of them. Their hunt area has a lot of trophy caribou, with 25% taken making a record book, including #2 Pope and Young and #5 and #11 BC. If you would like some more info about them, just let me know.
