A friend of mine was hunting last weekend for 2nd rifle OTC elk and someone shot a moose and took all the backstraps and left the carcass. I guess CDOW found out and was chacking everyone fto find out who it was. Has anyone heard about this? What a shame!!!!
I believe this is the 3rd or 4th moose poached this year. Believe there was 12 known cases last year.
That is terrible! They even send out a postcard before the season letting you know there are moose in the area and make very clear the differences between a moose and elk. Whoever did that must have some B!@#$ !!!. What would they do if another hunter heard the shots and walked up on them? Shoot the hunter?
This is really sad. I have no mercy for guys that do that.
Thats just horrible. There seems to be a lot of poaching cases this year. Like Exbio said it's the 4-5 case reported so far on this forum alone. I hope officals can catch the party responsible for this and through the book at them. I feel there shouldn't be any mercy shown to these ciminals. All they are doing is stealing an oppertunity for a law bidding hunter.
Especially, when someone waits 15 years or longer to get enough points for a Moose hunt, and these clowns think they can just steal them. I get more pissed thinking about it.
Most of the moose I have seen, just stand around and look at you. At least out of the season anyway. What would possess anyone to shoot something that big out of the season? Meat? The thrill of killing something? Then leave most of it to rot away?
The scary part is, it happened in the unit I was hunting. I don't wanty people like that hunting anywhere close to me. Who knows what they are capable of.

The three I encountered over the weekend likewise stood and looked at me for a while (all well under 100 yds) and finally walked off. It's a shame I didn't have a moose tag; it would have been too easy. They were fun to watch, but shooting one never crossed my mind. Hope the poacher is caught and dealt with appropriately.
I have not heard of this one. I usually do get an e-mail from the Parks and Wildlife or the DOW. That is just too bad. I was raised differently I guess. You are right though - definitely don't want to hunt with somebody that would do that. And yes, if you walked up to them they probably would have shot at you. I too hope they are caught. This was no mistaken identity - they knew what was in the crosshairs and shot it just to harvest the backstraps. Idiot criminals!
Very, very sad to hear about this. It's bad enough when it happens anywhere, let alone in a place like Colorado, where there isn't a huge population of Moose. Plus, people spend 15+ years on the list, waiting for the privelage and opportunity to hunt one of those great critters, and some idiot comes along and poaches them.
Ugh. I wish somehow karma visits these poachers on one of their hunts. Really sad if they get away with this, which most likely, they will. They probably sliced those out in minutes, and got away with 20+ pounds of meat.
Well we can only hope that the number of poachers is less this year are we don't see the number of "accidental" shots as compared to last year!
