Moose Hunt W.M.U. 17

Anybody have any info on hunting WMU 17 in Ontario Sept 17th thru 24th? Is the first week prime or later better. Hunt is already booked for 07' and looking for some helpful info on the area or any past success from members of the board. Also are there overnight accomdations in Nakina?

Chomping at the bit, lol.

Welcome.....Can't help much with information about Nakina or WMU 17, however I can say that the time you will be hunting should be perfect. I have shot 3 bulls over the years. Two were taken on Sept.20th, one Sept. 22nd. That was further south ( WMU 38 ) but things should happen around the same time in Area 17. The weather will have a real impact on your hunt as it does for all hunting. High winds or extreme heat seem to shut things down. Seems the moose are a lot more reluctant to "run" to the call in these conditions, but that doesn't mean the hunts over. In these conditions you may have to change your tactics a bit and go to the moose rather than expect him to come to you. Don't be afraid to go right into the woods and call from there. The moose will be looking for shaded areas ( it can still get very warm in Sept. ) and calling from these spots can be productive. It won't be your classic hunt where the bull comes across a beaver meadow and grunts with every step, but it will work. The action will be tight and shots will be close. Beats sitting back at camp complaining about the warm weather. In high winds try and find low areas that offer some shelter from the elements. Shot one bull on a very windy day, didn't see or hear a thing until I spotted him looking in my direction at 35yds. Shot him when he turned to leave. Anyway I'm rambling......there are some northern boys that have a lot more knowledge about moose than I do and hopefully they will respond to your post. Good luck and hope for cold, frosty September mornings, they're amazing for calling!!

Thanks Wylde. Thats great info. Heard they had a decent snow last year first week. Looking forward to the hunt. Got 2 bull and two cow tags. Hoping for decent weather to hunt swamps and lowlands. Figuring on about an 8 hour ride from the Soo to Nakina. Is calling to the swamps a decent technique? How bout drifting the river system looking for bulls on the move?

Gona go pretty lite on the gun size, .270. Should I go with speed and a lighter grain or stick with the 150 load.

Id go a little bigger than 150 but its up to you and nakina should be beautiful this time of year. You should have very good luck bring some warm clothes and like wylde said hope for nice frosty mornings you should have some great ones. The weather has been great lately around here Nakinas a couple hours from here just a little rain but still a couple hot spells hopefully it cools down for your hunt and good luck. Hot spells, cold wind and air after 6 its been cooling down alot should have some good frost soon your comming at the perfect time. Bird season opens in the morning so the roads will be packed again and bow season just started.

Piston, you stated that your hunt was from Sept. 17th to 24th. Just wondering how things went. Any 4 legged, long nosed passengers along for the ride home?

Brother got a bull approximately 700-800 pounds about 2 1/2 years old. Cousin got impatient and shot a calf, didn't wait it out and catch a bull chasing cow and calf. I saw nothing but had a great time. Learned alot and think next time I will fair much better now that I got a good lay of the land. Caught tons of walleye, 7 over 24 inches. Weather was extremely warm. T-shirt one day, good amount of rain and wind with no frost. Wish it would have been colder. I'll try to link a pick of bull.
