Moose Calling

i make mine out of gallon plastic milk jugs--thro cap away-drill 1/4 inch hole in bottom middle,- feed 36 inches of 1/4 inch cotton rope thru hole-knot rope on inside of jug- make rope wet and use thumb and fore finger-pull away from jig bottom-sounds like a cow moose bawling-also allow water into jug-pour out-sounds lile a moose urinating--

Moose Calling

ADK: We did get our moose in Zone P. The one you saw at Bennington Fish Hatchery may have been the state record (65") taken in 2002 by Robert Dewey in the same zone. Haven't heard the official take for the 2003 season but I understand Zone P was productive including at least 1-nice bull. Heard Town of Woodford (just east of Bennington) produced a good number. Saw a nice bull last spring & soem cows...moose sign's getting easier to find than deer lately.

Moose Calling

I've used a can call for years, the best one to date was a corn can, one of the short fat ones, i've tried most everything else but the corn can's the way to go. punch a hole in the center of the bottom, run a flat boot lace through and tie a knot in each end. Wet the string and you're away. The duct tape is not a bad idea, especially the camoflage stuff. As far as a coffee can goes I've never had one work, besides that's alot of tin to be packin'!
P.S. you can do the winey cow calls by starting close to the can and running your moisened fingers down the full length of the string, the bull grunts are done by short jerks near the end of the string. (about 18-20") hold the bottom rim of the can so you don't dampen the vibration.
You can see some pics of moose called this way @- http://www.mcohunting.com

Calling Moose!

Moose are like poorly trained dogs, they will come for a call if they want to and not much else is going on.

The one exception is during the height of the rut, when the younger bulls get careless and the older bulls get jealous.

Then they will come like they are on fire as long as they believe what they hear to really be another moose..

In many years in the bush I have seen all different types of calls. Some people use cans and string, some use an old clorox bottle and string. The old timers used a Birch bark megaphone. ie. a roll of bark in the shape of a large cone or funnel for the younger folks who don't remember magaphones.

Our guides just use cupped hands and call. That is how I do it too.

Two important things, actually three.

1. Don't call from where you intend to sit. Go off 50 to 100 yds and call there. Then scamper back to the sit spot or stand, set up and wait there.
2. Don't call too much. Every time you call, any moose in range will hear it, they have ears like radar and will home in on the exact spot. Also; remember you are NOT a moose. Every time you call, a moose has one more chance to spot a phoney. They are big, but not stupid.
3. Don't call and expect immediate results. They come when they want to. If you don't have at least 30 minutes to sit, forget it. You will simply have a moose show up after you leave, if he comes at all.

How do I know these things?
Ask this moose!

or this one,

How about 40 years of hunting, the last 20, hunting or being in the lodge with up to 6 hunters and guides coming and going every day for 6 -7 weeks.

You learn a lot about moose by doing it and seeing it done. I have done my share of both.

Regards and good hunting to all.

Moose calling

Hey,
I was just checking out all the chatter about moose calling. Your right a coffee can be used to call in moose, but to call in moose succesfully time and time again i strongly recommend another method. I have called in lots of big bulls for hunters in Maine, I have made a moose calling video and really enjoy calling moose every fall. I call by using a magaphone. This amplify's the call and it can be used for splashing water or imitating a moose urinating. For more information on Moose Calling or the Moose calling video feel free to email me.

Sept 29th here in Maine during the first week of the moose season I harvested my bull moose when my father called it in using the Bull magnet moose call from Alaska.
