50/63

We're on the line (almost literally) between Z50 and 63. My brother reports good "numbers" of deer but hasn't seen much to speak of in the way of decent bucks. Which is odd since we have pretty good intel that very few were taken from our local area last season and we saw a TON of awesome bucks, and if it was natural population depletion (predation or winter kill) it should have affected the whole herd, not just the big bucks. We think they're holed up somewhere and perhaps a bit spooked by the elk season (there were a lot of elk hunters out our way this year). We're hoping once the rut hits they'll reappear.

I'm not worried, I just want to hunt. If I end up taking a doe I'm OK with that.

Rain

Well as if it wasnt hard enough to get around on the backroads and bushtrails already.
I went out early this morning but returned home by noon, it started raining hard, and did'nt let up till after lunch.
If it wasnt for bad luck this year i would'nt have any luck. This is the craziest hunting weather we have had for years, one day is -15C and a foot of snow, a few days later its +5 and raining, and a 30mph wind.

Wake up to rain this morning, then about 2 this afternoon it snowed AND then in 1HR we got 6 more inches of wet snow. This is getting crazy, it was already tough to get anywhere off the beaten path. Gonna be worse now

true...but

The access challenge will sort out who the real hunters are and who just drives around in trucks hoping to get lucky. Nice thing about home is that there's no shortage of farmers with tractors to help get the 1000lbs of dead moose out of where ever it fell for a few T-bones at least.

After all, if was easy and done in good weather, it wouldn't be called hunting; it'd be called golf.

More Snow Coming

Was out this morning, saw one good bull. Snow is up to my knees in a lot of places, not much fun going through the bush, getting one out will be less fun, if it ever happens.
And we have another system coming at us and they are predicting another 6 inches by the end of tomorrow.

Persistance Pays Off

With 3 days left in the season, i decided to head over to an area i know holds moose. I was getting close to the area when i spotted 2 sets of fresh tracks. A few minutes later i spotted a young cow and bull.
The rest is history, one shot to the neck with my 338WinMag and the work started. Thank god for hunting buddies, we had her dressed, skinned, quartered and loaded in an hour and we were off hunting deer.

Congrats! You are right that drawing a moose tag is like winning the Lottery. Way to stick with it!
