moon phase and elk hunting

I have recently signed up to go on my first elk hunt. I will be going after them with a bow in western colorado. The outfitter I am going with has the 3rd and 4th week available. I was wondering if moon phases seem to make much difference with elk hunting. It sure seems to with the whitetail that I chase. I know very little about elk hunting as was wanting some advice. I am going in the fall of 2011. Looks like a full moon on the 12th, last quarter on the 20th and a new moon on the 27th. If you had your pick, what week would you go?

Go on the new moon. Where in Colorado and what outfitter ? I've been going north of Durango the last two years. Got a Arizona tag this year so I'll be staying here. Lots of elk up there. Good luck.

Between Rifle and New Castle with Silver Spur Outfitters. Sounds like they have lots of elk and private ground. Not known for a high percentage of trophy animals but I don't care about that being it will be my first elk hunt. Just want to be in the animals so I can learn and have some fun. I can't wait. I believe the archery season ends on the 25th next year so I can't hunt the new moon which is on the 27th. I am guessing I should get as close as I can though and go the last week. I know weather plays a bigger role than anything but would like to put as many odds in my favor as possible. Thanks for the info and good luck to you as well.

If I only had one week to hunt during archery seaon I would either pick the very first week or the last week. The moon does change the rut quite a bit. They will rut throughout the night and bed for the better part of the day with them giving you a very limited window early in the morning and late in the evening.

Good luck and good hunting!

Re: moon phase and elk hunting

A few years ago my brother killed a bull at about 10 in the morning during a full moon phase. Listened to the bull bugle all night, got quiet early in the morning, and heated back up later in the morning . . . In your case, I bet it would be decent hunting either way. If I had to choose, I'd choose the last week.
