Montana Unlimited License Bighorn Units

Has anyone ever hunted in one of the four units in Montana that offer unlimited tags for bighorn sheep? They have a kill quota of two rams in each. I have always wondered about that hunt and I was wondering if anyone has ever done it, has any info, etc?
Thanks!
Ryan

I have read some stories from guys who have. They say it is a really tough hunt, lots of Grizzlies and very rugged. Most guys don't stay in the area very many days before they give up. They say, they're legal rams in those units but the trick is to find them. If you decide to hunt it, please keep us posted.

I live close to there, so it should not be to much of a problem to scout it. I think I am going to go spend some time in there this fall and scout. If I think there is potential, I will go for it next year. I will keep you posted, for sure. Thanks for the info.

There is a book by a guy (authors name temporarily escapes me) who has killed at least 4 rams in there. He gives specific instructions of exactly where to go. Details like exactly where to park and what trails to take to get you to where the sheep are. By reading through his stories and noting little details you can pinpoint exactly where he saw those sheep and where he killed 'em. I bought the toppos and started the research before Mont. went to the preference point system and now I have too many points to give them up. If I didn't have any I would start on it and keep at it until I kiled one. Duncan Gilchrist used to say that If you keep at the unlimited units and really do it right you should kill a ram within seven years. Thats not to bad really. Atcheson guides in there. I think he probably does a ton of preseason work and charges something like 8K for the hunt and then another 8k when you knock one down. I have every article I ever found on the unlimiteds copied so send me a PM with your address and I will make copies and send them out to you. Good luck. You better be tough because I looked at the topos and it looks like HELL in there.

AKBound and other sheep fanatics ... I'd appreciate keeping me in the loop on the Montana Unlimited Bighorn Hunts ... from what I gather over the years - sounds like extreme stuff - that's what makes it attractive. Keep me in the loop.

AKBound - I also sent you a PM.

From what i know the outfitters that hunt that area don't have much success up there either. Myself and a couple of buddy have been kicking around the idea of going up there but it is hard to put in up there and give up all bonus points that we have got for a good zone. If you decide to go good luck and be careful, Hiker and AKBound is right killer country and lots of Griz.
