Montana General Elk Season

A couple buddy's and I drew the General Elk/Mule deer combo tag in Montana. This will be my first time hunting in montana and there second. We have general area (Beaverhead) were we will start hunting, but looking for some plan B and maybe C's. Do any of you have any suggestions on locations. Not looking for exact GPS coord, but general area would be great. Not trying to get a trouphy bull, just a nice meat bull. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advanced

Joe

We hunted in the LoLo / Cabinet Mountains near Noxon MT in 2007. Road hunters on the weekend were all over the place, but on Monday, and especially Tuesday, it was calm and all we could hear was the wilderness around us. Hope for cool weather, or even cold weather and snow...it'll keep many hunters away and the elk moving. Get as high as possible to scout and look for clearings. The elk are there so be patient.

We saw a nice heard of elk on our last two days, we had to leave which sucked ,do to work obligations, and I was not in good enough shape to "run" to the elk...but we were humping it like boot camp. My ankle was hurt hiking about 2 weeks prior to our trip so that didn't help. We dressed in layers but I was sweating the whole time we moved because we had to hike fast. I ended up getting surgery on my ankle - I guess when you love to hunt you don't notice the little pains as much, but the boots helped with the tear!

We took a few very nice mule deer opening morning/evening, I got a "little" 4x5 trophy, atleast a trophey to me!!.

My father took a nice 6x6 near the Crazy Mountains back in 1997 but that was 12 years ago when he was hunting with an old vietnam buddy. My pops said the Crazies are sometimes overlooked by elk hunters.

Don't come here we already have enough out of staters that screw it up for the people that actually live here and make a living here. Its hard enough on what little lands we get to hunt on because of what out of staters do.
