Montana elk hunting trip

Hi,
i am currently trying to plan an elk hunt in montana in 09. Can anyone give any suggestions or recommendations of areas to hunt. I am looking at any type 2 BMA or anything else you all might think. Thank you very much for any help or suggestions.

check out national forests near Yellowstone National Park. During archery season big bulls can be found in a lot of different areas

Rifle or archery?

Check out http://www.moga-montana.org/ even if you're not using a guide there's a lot of good info on this site. What part of Montana are you wanting to hunt? I've hunted the eastern part for mulies & the milk river for whitetails. Also you'll have a better chance of drawing a combo elk/deer tag than just a deer tag.

How hard are you willing to work? If you want to hunt during the rut you can hunt the backcountry unit 316 in mid september with a rifle. But the zone doesn't begin until you are more than 5 MILES into the backcountry. I hunted on foot one year in that zone while in college. Didn't harvest but had a great time. Some of the Block Management around the Shields river (is that unit 3 or 4?) has elk especially to the west. Also, I harvested a 5x5 bull on John
Anderson's BMA in the Ruby River Valley(8 years ago). You have to reserve a spot, but he is very helpful. The cover is sparse on his foothills, but that just concentrates the elk and deer. My college buddies have also taken smallish deer on his place. A great plan for finding good Block Management is looking for those that border public land where the pressure should be higher, pushing animals into your area. The Block Management straight south of Bozeman is very difficult to get onto. You have to reserve way in advance.

I am thinking there are a lot of big bulls during archery season, but they all move back into the park or into the deep dark timber by the time rifle season rolls around.
