Montana Bucks

This buck was taken in the Sun Canyon just outside of Augusta Montana.. The target for the day was mule deer but before we were out of the bottom country and up on the ridge tops this guy popped out and it was more buck than we chose to let pass by. As far as I know the second buck here is still out there in northwest Montana getting bigger every year

Thanks, Montana can produce some whitetails. The ones pictured here are not high on the score sheet but with a little effort I think a trophy hunter type can find some satisfaction there.

Did you have to draw for the buck tag? or just pay a lot for it. I 've hunted eastern montana 2 years in a row we got doe permits for $50 non res but any tag after that was like $8.An "A" tag (buck) was 1200 non res.First year we got 14 deer between 3 of us and the 2nd year 11 for 2 of us the second year we party hunted with the rancher bought his buck tags for $8 He was happy to get the deer off his fields the herds out there are un believable 100-200 head strong

I was a Montana resident at the time these deer were taken. I let go of my residences 12 years ago when I moved to Alaska. I now pay for the "Outfitters" tag when I hunt Montana. This year the combo deer and elk tag was $977.25. It still beats the drawing, I would rather pay the inflated price than wait for my name to pop out of the hat with the draw system. I've always pretty much considered the money I have to spend on tags were my contribution to the wildlife management system in the given state. I feel as if the tag prices in any given state needs to reflect the quality of what they have to offer a hunter and I find Montana's system to be a rather fair deal. I have been involved in a few different state managed damage hunts for deer in the past. I recall some rather large numbers of deer harvested from a few different christmas tree farms. These hunts sure put a lot of meat in the freezer with plenty leftover to share.

If I rember right the DNR will give you a list of ranchers that will allow you to hunt their land that's what we did for the second year. We hunted in Glascow
