Forget 16 and 19 the wolves & bears have been making a living on moose calf crop. It has just been the last few years open season was declared on the wolves and this year on the bears. 16 has gone from 8000 - 10,000 a few years back to less than 4,000 moose with less than 1/4 those numbers would be legal bulls if there was a season on them.

you could try unit 20, i've seen quite a few around those parts in the past. although vehicle access is limited, you might do pretty well by boat.

The self-centered part of me says to tell you to stay away from Unit 20 -- far away. No moose here at all. All the moose are down south.

But I've go too much integrity for that. Unit 20 is widely regarded as having some of the best (if not the best) moose hunting in the state. However, ndemiter hits it right on the head. Access to the best areas can be a problem. If you want give it your best shot, going in by boat would be the way to go, particularly in areas like the Tanana flats. There is a lot of water out there, and you can be amazed at how much of a difference in hunter population there can be between one side of a river and another.

Alaska doesn't have a lot of hunters per square mile, but access drives how those hunters are distributed. A general rule of thumb is the more you spend on the toy (ATV, boat, plane), the fewer people you'll see when you get there.

just returned from a trip to alaska, where i was the camp cook/ packer for jeremy davis at lake country lodge/canoe bay outfitters. if you are looking for quality outfitters for really big moose, these are the guys. they got six moose this year (last i heard) and the average for them was about 67". six moose, seven hunters. that's a pretty good success rate, also.
