Mock Scrapes - Success in Illinois

I made three mock scrapes in Illinois this week with the tarsal gland lure I wrote a hunting tip about recently...

One was ignored as of the second day.

One was lightly scraped in - with visible hoof marks. The licking brand is slightly frayed.

For the third one - which is only about thirty yards from the second one - it is very well scraped and the licking branch has been torn down and is laying in the scrape!!!

Just thought a quick report was in order.

Oh yeah, I made the batch of lure with 4 glands and about a quart of water and used it liberally.

Good to hear Jim.  My Dad

Good to hear Jim.  My Dad went out on Tuesday and hit the 6 or 7 scrapes that have appeared with some tinks 69.  Went back in today and saw the scrapes were hit since he touched them up.  He thinks the buck is on a 2 day cycle, which would put him back there Saturday morning, opening morning... Wink

Ok great!! Maybe he can

Ok great!!

Maybe he can intercept him!

That wouold be sweet - to pattern him in that manner and then catch him in the act!!

Good luck with it.

I will be back in Illinois on Thursday to see if these have been freshened up.

We will see!!!

Well, no luck the first 2

Well, no luck the first 2 days.  He was last spotted on Thursday, heading right for my Dad's stand.  go figure, 2 days early.  Anyway, he did see a buck opening day but didn't get a shot.  Hopefully he'll get something the next day or 2.

CA-V Send him our best luck

CA-V

Send him our best luck and well wishes!!

We hope he gets on a nice one, for sure.

I am dying here at work - the best part of the year and I feel like I am chained to my desk here in SC!!

My buddy in northern Illinois called today - he saw 13 different bucks from daylight to dark yesterday, including many over 130 inches and one that was a 140.

He has a 160 on trail cam that he is holding out for.

I cannot expect this on public land but if I can just get a single 130 or better to come into range....

Good luck!!!!

Interesting what a "trophy"

Interesting what a "trophy" is to each of us.  I'd be happy with a 120 or 130.  I will take a shot at one of these in a heartbeat.  But I suppose if I knew a bigger one was lurking out there and I had the time to hunt him, that is what I would do too.  I think that is the good and bad of trail cams.  They sometimes make us pass on deer that we'd normally take in hopes of the big one we caught, but then they also let us know when a real shooter comes in compared to those being caught on the camera.

trophy

We all agree that a trophy is in the eye of the bow-holder (pun clearly intended).

If I get there and the woods are swamped with hunters (which one would suspect with a three day shotgun season) and I see a good clean shot on a 125 incher, I will probably take it.

On the other hand, if I can find a semi secluded location and am seeing deer pretty consistently - particulularly if there appears to be some chasing involved - I will become a lot more selective.

Take one and you're done...so choose wisely.

It is that age old struggle between tag soup and one in the truck.

Great dilemma to have and I just hope I am faced with it!!

Need to bust 125 if I can...

Too funny, Jim. I'm a little

Too funny, Jim. Thumbs up

I'm a little confused...will you be bow hunting or shotgun hunting? You just couldn't resist the pun?

Good luck on your trip...knock down a brute!

Both!

ECU,

I will catch the very tail end of a bow only day - Thursday - and will bow hunt that afternoon where I bow hunted a week ago.

I know a few decent areas.

Starting Friday, it will be a three day shotgun hunt.

I will get to test out my brand new Savage 220F bolt gun in 20 gauge - I used it in SC a little bit in October and did take a deer with it - now I want to try it out in the area I purchased it for - the Midwest.

So, the puns was intended for the first afternoon and I will have to come up with a good one for the remaining three days. I had been waiting a while to use the bow-holder one!

Loading up tonight here in SC - leaving at 5:00 PM after work tomorrow. I intend to try to make it as far as Nashville or a little further and take a room and then get up Thursday morning and make the remainder of the trip... getting there before noon.

Get squared away and catch a bow hunt... and then get stoked for the shotgun hunt.

Wish me luck!

Jim

Good luck on your hunt and be

Good luck on your hunt and be careful on your drive. Don't push yourself too much. You do want to get there and back in one piece.
Now smoke an Illinois bruiser.
