Minnesota bear hunt

Well this was may second year bear hunting on a do it yourself bear hunt on public land and was fortunate enough to bag a second bear in as many years. Not a big as last years but but measurements est. him at 180-200 pounds.

I am heading back out today to take my son out for the weekend, he was with me last year when I shot my first one and got hooked! We will have to see what happens?

No more bear were harvested, actually we didn't see any but the baits were hit each and every night. The site we hunted had large bear sign all the time and I believe that was the only bear using that particular bait. My son was determined to shoot that one so we stayed on that bait the entire time w/o any luck, but had a fun time trying.

We will try it again next year! We did get to see a wolf with a young of the year, which was pretty cool.

I imagine any time spent in the wilderness with your son would be time well spent. A wolf is an impressive animal, that is for sure.

Sounds like you'll be at it again next year!

I had same kind of luck as your son, came home with out a bear but had a great time!

First time on stand [2nd day of season] I had three wolves come in. because it was raining I had a black cowboy hat on to keep the rain off me, had a wolf come in about 4 O'clock gave me a funny look staired and gave a little head dance, when I moved a little to turn on my vcr recorder it left. It was colored tan or tawney I thought it might be a coyote. A little while later a different one came in this one was lighter colored more sliver or white. It wondered around the bait site for a while then left.

Next I heard some noise somewhat like a hand operated siren coming from where I had parked my pick-up. Then some noise ,I thought talk radio, coming from the logging road that goes by my stand, I thought some bunny huggers were there to disrupt my hunt as this has happened in this area before.

Then the wolf that was ther first came back in was not there very long when we heard a wolf howl, that wolf left then.

At that time I realized that the bunny hugger weren't there after all.

About 6 o'clock three wolves came in together two were tan or brownish colored and one was the white one, the white one and one of the brown were females I think and one was a big male.

They watched me and did that little head dance from time to time, the male kept trying to get a little red squirel that was under the bait logs, the white wolf did eat one donut.

They hung around for a little over a half hour, then when they left they seemed to be quite upset about something huffing and snaping their jaws, I then knew what the sound was that came from the road. I then thought it was a good time for me to hit the road.

I moved to a different stand the next night and the second night there I had a sow and 3 cubs come in and that was all I seen this year.

Trapper 62:

On the ND fur takers web site there is a picture of a track with a dollar bill next to it.

What is the story of that track?

That picture was taken by a person in ND that was wondering if it was feline or canine.

I just copied his picture and placed the red lines on it. That is what I use as a rule of thumb to determine feline from canine. The cat track is more rounded and the X in most cases will cross through the pad, canine tracks are more elongated and the X will usually pass in front of the pad.

Not fool-proof but for the most part it works. The individual was wondering if it was a cougar track.
