Minimum Moose cartridge

What would your suggestions be for the minimum cartridge effective for moose. The clarify things a bit - we'll say that it must be capable of a clean kill at 100yds (ie: able to penetrate the shoulder bone and hit the vitals).

Current bidding starts at a 30/30....(for argument's sake)

I once saw a story about a guy who's kid took a moose with a .243. Personally, I like my kids way to much to let them try something like that.

I've lived in Sweden for most of my adult life, most of the moose shot there is with 6.5mm SWEDISH which is comparable to a .270 Roberts. I also believe that a 30-30 is too small a cartrige for moose...PC

Penetrate the shoulder bone? That's going to be pretty difficult for any .270 bullet. In fact, if your aim is to be able to break the shoulder bone, then I think you want nothing smaller than a .300 magnum.

On the other hand, there's no real need to break the shoulder bone. A lung shot will kill a moose as well as it will kill anything else. For that a .270 with a heavy-for-caliber bullet will work fine.

Personally I have a .30-'06 that I load with 180 grain Hornady Light Magnum rounds. It works quite well on elk and I have no doubt that it will be fine for moose when I eventually get enough preference points to draw a tag here in Colorado.

I've seen the shoulder smashed to pieces multiple times by the 6.5mm Swedish with a 150gr bullet. The difference is that the moose are somewhat smaller and usually the ranges are less that 100 yards as comapred to hunting in AK or CO....PC

my opinion

imho i would say the .7mm/08 it has flat tragectory and hits good maybe a .35 remington for the sake of the matter. yet my personal comfort minimum is the .7mm mauser

You would have no problem breaking the shoulder with a 270,its not made of titanium, get a grip.

A 270 Weatherby Mag will penetrate the shoulder. With a 150 grain having a sectional density of .279, it will perform as well as or slightly better than a 300 Winchester Magnum shooting a 180 grain bullet. A smaller and less powerful 270 I would not trust on a shoulder shot.

30.06, .303, .308 all perfect refiles for taking down a moose at 100yrds.

An article i liked thought someone else might.

I shoot a Remington Gamemaster .270, I have seen people hit bulls at distances well over 100 yards and cleanly kill them.

Which is I guess why I purchased this caliber, Since it is perfect for deer and moose, I am also going to shoot A bear this year...I like this gun so much in fact that my bow is collecting dust. Apart from the occasional fun-shoot.

.270, 150gr. core lokt
