Thanks Hiker for posting pic for me! I cant seem to figure out posting pictures here, i can e-mail them however. What makes this deer real special to me is its age. I showed it to a biologist in the area i took it and he figured it to be over ten years of age at least. The deer came from Glasgow, Montana area north of Fort Peck Resovoir. I have hunted that area before and done ok but never expected to shoot an over the hill buck. The hunt itself was incredible...its hard but i'll try to do a short version. I spotted three bucks about one away feeding on the side of a hill, so i began a stalk. I saw from far off that one had very white antlers and was a little larger than his buddies. I had to use some hills and coulees for cover as i closed in, all the while my adrenline was pumping! Some low hills i had to actually belly crawl over to keep my profile low. At first i thought deer were not that far but later confirmed them at 1.3 miles. It took almost two hours to crawl to within 262 yards and by then they bedded on the hillside. Ever see those little dug-out areas that mule deer seem to bed in? Anyway i got in position and ranged the old dude at 262 yards, he was facing me slightly so i elected to wait till he stood. I waited for an hour and got impatient and decided i could place my bullet where i wanted. I had an awsome rest to shoot from, a prone position with a sod bank of grass. What i did not consider was the quartering wind that was gusting one second and fairly calm the next. I waited { i thought} for a calm moment then squeezed one off. I thought i missed completley as he jumped to his feet and trotted broadside about 30-40 yards. I chambered another round and aimed tight to the crease behind the shoulder and fired. Bingo! nailed him good i thought, he dropped into a coulee and i figured i'd double lunged him. The other two buck were confused and just stood there. All a sudden a big buck comes out of the same coulee as mine went into and join the other two. Man i thought it was mine and almost drilled him! Darker antlers kept me from making a bad mistake. Within minutes all three bucks bed back down within sight, i was stunned. I wait fifteen minutes and figure my deers gotta be dead right? So i tell my buddy to stand up and scare off the other deer and im gonna be ready to shoot if my deer join them. He does it and they scoot out of there and all is calm, so we sneak quietly toward the coulee. I spot my deer lying on his side with his head flat on the ground and figure he's toast! I mean were 20 yards from this deer right and my buddy slaps me on the shoulder and is saying "congrats" when this buck leaps up and peels away away at warp 5! Im dumbfounded and let him have two more shots as he's hauling ### away. Both shots miss and over the hill he goes. I run up to next hill he went over and see him real slowly walking away, kinda sickly like. I finally stalk up and finish the deal and find out what happened with my first two shots. Wind drift! First shot just grazed him to the right and second shot was off the same distance to the right. Caught him in the liver on the second shot however. Wind was left to right and checked rifle and it was fine. Sorry for the long story but it was quite exciting things like that you'll never forget! I posted my antelope pic from the same hunt in the antelope catagorie. Both hunts were self-guided. Western hunting is awsome! Im from northern Michigan where the cover is thick and most bucks die far too young! Good hunting to all!

The one that came out of the same draw and almost got shot at was a 4x5. About as wide as mine but real dark antlers. The other two bucks were smaller, a 3x3 and a smaller 4x4. That was also the last day i had to hunt. I had passed up a ton of forks and real small 3x3 and 4x4 smallish bucks. It was going to be a decent buck or bust.

Thanks for the story. And don't apologize for its length - I have not read a story on BGH that was too long. We're with ya, man.

I use the same old rifle every time i hunt. Remington 700 bolt-action .30-06 with Remington Core-lock 165gr. bullets. I have taken whitetails, black bear ,caribou, mulies and one antelope so far. This year im going to alaska for blacktail deer and i'll use the same setup. In my opinion being familiar with your rifle and ammo will make a bigger differance than anything. Oh by the way i 've got a leuopold (sp) 3-9 scope on the rifle.
