Mid October Cow Hunt Calling?

Still a novice in the elk world, this is only our second trip and the first trip we mostly chased mule deer and ignored the cow elk tag in our pockets. This year we drew cow elk in Wyoming unit 31 and wondering if we should purchase any calls and how to use them. Not specifically how to use them but should we use them just to try to stop an elk for a shot or to try to bring them closer? Or maybe not at all. This is historically a very good unit so maybe we shouldnt even get them? Just looking for a little advice from you experienced hunters. Also any advice on what call to purchase?

Thanks

wouldn't bother

I doubt you'd be able to get them to come to a cow call, and you can always stop them with other noises you can make with your mouth.

I agree don't worry about

I agree don't worry about using a call to try and stop or get a cow to come into you.  Usually when they break and start to run the only thing that is going to stop them is when they get to where they are planning on going.

I agree if they are spooked

I agree if they are spooked nothing will stop tghem but their destination.  I have used a cow elk chrip to stop them from walking when they did not know I was there, but that is about all a call will do for hunting cows in Otocber.

I have called in Cows with

I have called in Cows with lost cow calls.  but it is a 1 in 20 chance they respond.  It really doesn't work to stop them if they know you are there.  Your best bet is to spot them before they spot you.
