Any familar with the Area around Meeker, Co. I'm looking at my applying for a mule deer tag over that way for me and my dad. Torn between Meeker and Kremmling? Any thoughts on the two does one have more/ better public land then the other? Any thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated.

I have heard that it took a hit with winter kill and harvest rates were down, but with no PP saved up my harvest odds drop anyways so just lookin' for a good hunt to spend time with my dad and hunt mule deer.

Thanks guys

Both areas have very high mule deer densities. Assuming you mean Units 12,13,23,24 and 15,35,36,45. West of Meeker the deer density drops, and east of Kremmling. Both areas receive a lot of pressure, I've hunted 12,13,23,24 but not 15,35,36. The DAU that covers 15,35,36,45 has 6 more deer per square mile than the Meeker units, which still has a very high density.
The Gunnison Basin was hit much harder with winter kill last year, and the surveys aren't out yet, so anything you may have heard is just anecdotal. The units that were hit heavily had the deer tags cut in half, so harvest will be way down, but not necessarily success rate(we'll see on that one). This winter isn't done yet, and it won't be by the time you have to apply, but I doubt it will be as bad as last year. At this time in 2008 the DOW had already begun an emergency winter feeding.
Anyway, I'd recommend the Kremmling area just based on deer density, as long as you are hunting south and west of there. Don't go east. And I don't know if you've hunted Colorado before, but if you want to go when there is less pressure, go during 3rd or 4th season, not 2nd. Lots of elk hunters during 2nd season.

Thanks exbiologist I really appreciate it. I've only hunt Colorado one other time and that was just this past fall i hunted unit 171 for elk. I had a great time even though I didn't fill my tag.

I'll research public hunt in the Kremmling area. A buddy pointed towards 181 but said he hadn't hunted it for some time but it use to be good another pointed towards unit 12

This may help....

I hunt north of meeker every year 3rd Rifle season in gmu 211 and there is alot of deer in this area as well as public land. If you're after a trophy buck I wouldn't suggest this unit although we have seen nice bucks they are few and far between. But if you're looking for a decent buck or doe this area definitely has a lot of deer. If you're looking for a trophy buck I would suggest gmu 21 by rangely there is alot of public land and alot of deer and it's about an hour west of meeker. I went to school at Colorado Northwestern in Rangely and there is definitely alot of trophy bucks in that unit.

Thanks for the advice fmilinazzo, 11,211 is on my list
I need to contact the biologist up that way. And make a final decision. We are not really lookin' to take a monster, I'll hunt horns, but not 180 class more like a 130 class but my dad just looks for a deer and looks to have a good time.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Colorado Mule Deer

OK so i think I have it figured out i just need to make my final choice.
either
11,211 3rd season
or
12,13,23,24 3rd season.

Looks like 4th season is hard to get with no points. It seems like both choices have good public access. So now I'll start looking in to the finer details of which part of the unit to hunt. Thank you all for your input. Your help was/is greatly appreciated.
