McCain said to choose Alaska gov as running mate

I'm having a case of Palin fatigue, but I have to watch her in a few minutes, even after reading the excerps. This AM I turned on my browser to no new scandals, and this evening only another boring family thing about her, her husband and a former business partner and freind of her husband's. Yawn. She's supposed to be a great speaker so maybe I'll be happily suprised.

When watching a political speach I'm able to turn off my partisan brain and just listen. I don't listen to what is being said but how. I try to place myself inside the head of the intended audience. People say GW is a bad speaker, I disagree. Try listening to him as if you just got off a shift down at the sugar processing plant and you've already chugged a couple Lone Stars and a shot. I intend to listen to Ms Palin similarly. For this convention I'll imagine I'm a member of the flat earth caucus, or maybe one of her sucsessionist freinds.

Peggy Newnan's off the air remarks are telling. Especially since they are opposite to what she says in her WSJ piece today. McCain has been ducking out of scheduled interviews, Palin has been in seclusion, are they ever going to let her answer a question from a reporter? Wonder what she thinks of increased regulation by the Securities and Exchange Commision or the proposed entry of Ukrain into Nato.

Gota go and watch Huckabee, always my favorite from the debates.

So what are you going to do? Paste a scarlet letter on her mother and tell her that her career is over?

Do you have kids SoCo? Teenagers in particular? .

Hammer will not answer those questions directly, You see this has nothing to do with being a sportsman or caring about our issues to some bloggers. This is just a job. Oh sorry I meant SoCo Whistling

Hammer? WTH are you talking about? I do have teenagers and no, I don't think her career should be over. I wouldn't vote for her due to the fact that I am opposed to eighty percent of her hard right stands. Not due to her daughters pregnancy.

So, you jumping on the bandwagon of assuming I'm a plant? Can't fathom the thought that there may be a gunowner or hunter who doesn't drink the far right kool aid? Whatever makes you feel better pal. Brick Wall,)

Its Noonan. Noonan... if you read her column regularly at least spell it correctly.

The informed reader may wish to read this:

See what I'm talking about?

The sad thing was that the press is talking about her comments about Obama but ignoring the substantive remarks about her achievements as governor. The other talking point making the rounds in the press: her speech was written for her. Like Obama writes his own speeches. They're so condescending and desperate to demean her that they have to insinuate that she's a mindless figurhead that someone puts a script in front of.

There was a bit of awkwardness on part of the Palin family - not the polished Clinton, Kennedy or Bush family that we are used to seeing and you know what? It is okay and not only is it okay, it is refreshing.

Did anyone catch the youngest daughter holding her baby brother? She spit on her hand and combed back his hair. It was classic and touching.

Palin's speech was dynamic and her delivery perfect. It was every bit as good as Obama's with just one important difference. I believe her.

I loved Rudy pointing out that Mr. Community Organizer, when elected to the state senate voted "present" 130 times. He went on to say that a President can't vote present they have to make a decision.

Another striking difference is the spouses. McCain's wife and Palin's husband sit their, smiling, joyful and proud. Contrast that to the angry, militant and scowling Michelle Obama.

I was not a McCain fan and truth be told, I'd rather have someone else, but Palin is unifying. And, listening to the speeches last night talk about McCain and how you know what you're getting with him, has made me realize he is by far the better choice.

Sorry, Noonan, see I can do it, on a par with the rest of my spelling.

I watched from well before Romney who was laying the ground for 2012. One of the funniest lines was that the Roberts court are a bunch of liberals. Easy to see how the primaries ended up as they did. All in all I wasn't able to put myself in the right mood, and so couldn't watch Ms Palin in the appropriate mind set, that of a dedicated right wing voter. I blame the speaches that preceaded, Guliani was just downright bad. The bridge to nowhere bit didn't help either, every time I hear a blatant untrue statement I get out of the mood and become a democrat. The trick on these kinds of things is to hammer on your obvious strengths, hedge the shaky bits and don't even mention the bad ones.

Overall compared to the rest she got an 8, much better speaker than those grumpy old guys. Family got a 10, I like all of them. I feel for the kids. Who would want thier whole lives over the newspapers as a teenager? Did it pass the ready on day one, three AM call test, not even close, no substance lots of rhetoric. But then it's not supposed to be about issues anyway. It's about running for student council president.

Here's a poll from Gallup on the Palin affect. I love polls even though they need to be read with a generous heaping of salt. Great Noonan editorial as always, too bad about the open microphone, hard to say "I didn't really mean it" when it's on You tube. Last paragraph the most prescient.

More.

One thing I found weird but first some background.

After Palin's first appearance with McCain there was a viral video of McCains eyes supposedly being riveted somwhere they shouldn't have for long periods of Ms Palin's speach. Online someone pointed out that what he was really doing was reading the teleprompter at the same time she was reading, so to clap etc at the correct moments. A close look and that's what seems to be going on to me, just a strange camera angle.

The weird part is at the end of the speach when McCain goes to embrace her. Ms Palin has a difficult time getting a peck on the cheek from her "soul mate". Seems to be fending off his embrace multiple times.

Last night I saw the same body language. Look at the end of speach again when McCain embraces her. A little later she goes over and puts her hand behind his back and all seems normal again. But in those first few seconds I get the same feeling. Strange vibes. Not a good message to send.

For your basic repub and by that I mean white, believes in god, believes Iraq was a just cause, NRA member, believes Dems want to steal their money, her speech was a home run. She knocked it out of the park. Another words she electrified the base for ol Mccain who had a little trouble with all the repubs liking him due to his old maverick ways.

She did come off as a capable speaker and read her tailored made speech very well getting pretty mean and nasty in the process. Her speech writers hit all the right material and she delivered it well. This went a long way in getting back those evangelicals who didn't like Mccain back when he said those nasty things about Robertson and Falwell, I believe it was agents of intolerance, to be exact.

This move will shore up his base, but I don't think it will go very far in reaching independents and disaffected dems or Hillsters. Basically the whole night from Romney, to that Gargoyle gooliani, to her, was to throw insults at Obama. Well the gloves are off and with the debates and campaigning till Nov. expect it to get down and dirty.

Civetcat, I am sure we'll be accused of being delusional, but I agree with your assessment of her embrace with Mccain. It did seem akward initially.

Grasping at straws - criticizing Palin for not writing her own speech.

News Flash - Obama has a speech writer and doesn't write all his own speeches either.
