May be moving to MT

Will find out in the next couple of days about a job.
I'm pretty excited about the hunting opportunities. Moved to WY from MN last year and didn't have the chance to do any hunting here this year.
Have only hunted whiteail in MN, am looking for some info on elk hunting in North Central MT. Not looking for anything specific, as I have a couple of contacts that I'm going to check into, and a few months to really do some planning. But, never have hunted elk, am looking for some general info. Anything from wear, scent, ammo (I shoot a 300 mag). or anything else would be helpful.
Thanks

Elk are amazingly stealthy for how huge they are.

Montana ... yummm. If I didn't live in Idaho I'd look at MT real seriously.

Wait for this years block managment book to come out and start making reservations, look for the big ranches that limit the number of hunters on thier land and take reservations, these are the places that will have quality opportunitys, remember you have to live in the state for 181 consecutive days before you are considered a resident,if you wont have residency you will need to apply for a non resident tags.

I'll be living in Havre. Have some people I know that I will be able to hunt on their land. One of them got a really nice muley up their last year.
I'll be moving the first part of Feb. so the residency restriction won't be a problem.

You wont find many elk around Havre you will have to travel,if you archery hunt plan on hunting the CMR for bulls, you have to buy the tag before June 1 and only if you are a resident.

I am trying to move to great falls this summer and was wondering about the public land hunting opportunities in Montana, here in Utah there is quite a bit of public land but you half to really hike to get away from the crowds. I'd appreciate any replys.
Thanks,
Jeff

Any public land you hunt in MT will be the same way, lots of traffic,if you hunt the wilderness areas you need horses to get to where you can thin the crowds a bit, then you deal with all the outfittersa and they are the worst in the field, arrogent bastards act like they own the state cuz they are getting paid to find game.Your best bet is making reservation on BM lands as I said before.

closest to great falls you have th Highwoods or the Little Belts. Some fellas will go to augusta from Great Falls also.

I know several houndsmen in the Havre country also. Once your situated if you want I can hook you up with a friend in Great Falls that maybe able to at least point you in the right direction.

Like chaser said though public land is public land it will have hunters. Block management is the way to go, private ranches are usually outfitted if not in Block.

The place I probably will be going is around Fort Benton (east of there I believe.) Haven't hunted there, but know a guy from there, that goes up and hunts there every year.

Well, I made the move, and I have to say that I love what little I have seen that this state has to offer. Driving up from Billings, we saw a few elk a couple miles off the highway.
Going to the RMEF banquet next weekend, and have already made some contacts for elk hunting, looking forward to making some more contacts next weekend.
Thanks everyone for your advice, and if anyone has any more to offer it's greatly appreciated.
