May 20 Bear hunt

Tuesday May 23

We woke up around 4:30 , the camp was wet and muddy but at least no rain falling yet !
We spent the whole night in tents with rain falling hard , but today seems little better, the clouds still on top, but We came here to hunt bears and that's what we are going to do, nothing is gonna stop us !

after a quick breakfast we were ready to go to that some palce where we saw the bear den the day before , this time we decided to go on quads and walk from there.

The weather at this point was still FRIENDLY

May 20 Bear hunt

We reached the Bear den around 7, and decided to leave the quads near and walk near the shoreline of the creek looking for bear signs.

few hours later rain start dropping again but not as hard as yesterday, We continued walking the creek, and the more we walk the darker the place become, we were happy to discover this place, it was everything You ask for when You go for bear hunting.

now it's around 11 oclock, the guys decided to take a quick break , so we sat down for few minutes and then continued our search for bears, while looking for bears we found this Elk wallow that Elk seems to be using during the rut seasons , which gave us an idea to come back here and hunt Elk in August.
The wallow was about 2 feet deep and You can see Elk tracks on the edge of the top left side of the picture below, come Elk season I am gonna place one of my cameras there to check these Elk .

few hours later with no signs of bears , it was time to have a snack, We were happy to discover the Elk wallow, but I was sure that sooner or later we are gonna hit bear tracks or even seing one.

now it's 3 oclock, we reached the end of the creek, told the guys to check the ( TAIL ) of that creek cause this is usualy where You see signs, sure enough there was few bear signs and tracks on the egde of the creek.

We were happy to see fresh signs , We knew all along that we were in the right place but that doesn't mean that You can always see what You came for to see.
The bear tracks were made by mid size bear maybe 400 # bear , which is ok , cause who knows where these tracks can lead us to ?

We followed the fresh tracks for 3-4 hours , but We couldn't see the bear , by now it was almost 8 oclock, it's getting dark and the quads were at least few hours back . so we decided to quit the hunt for the day and come back the next day and continue the hunt from this spot and on!

on the way back to the quads we were surprised to see many bear scat that we didn't see while following the trail, that reminded me of one time while bear hunting how I jumped a bear in an area where I could swear I checked 10000 times on that day alone without seeing anything.

This should give You an idea of how smart and sneaky bears are ! remember that You are not the only hunter here, You are not the only stalker here, and by far the bear is more superior when it come to stalking and hunting then any best hunter out there!

We were late reaching the camp, we had a nice meal and we were out in a flash !
I woke up around 3 in the morning on the sound of wolf nearby , the rain was hard and lightining were filling the dark sky , I quickly fall back asleep hoping to see the rain stop by morning

Wednesday May 24

The rain was worse then ever, add lightning and thunderstorm , we had our breakfast and decided to go to that same spot where we saw the fresh bear scats yesterday.

We got there late, but with big hopes ! all the way I was thinking that this could be the day where we could get a shot at one of God magnificent animals, All black bear hunters know what it takes to get one , and if You are one of the lucky one to get a chance on spoting one and then stalk it and shoot it , then You should be proud of such a big achievement.

We start the walk from the creek tail and on, not too long after that , We were seeing lots of bear signs and scats, man We are in Bear country now and no one knows when or where a bear might jump in front, let's hope it does.!

Again and again no bears but lots of signs and to make things harder then it already is the rain was unreal and the cold was hitting us hard, we were wet to the bones and smell like a wet dog, no wonder why we didn't see any bears !

we decided to quit the hunt cause the weather was horrible , and one of my buddies was really tired and needed to get some rest if he was gonna be able to continue the next 3 days of this hunting trip!

The search of BIG FOOT !!

Finally the weather gave us a break we all needed,, the sky was dark , grey clouds were all over but at least no rain! man we were happy to see this !

left the camp early, my buddy was feeling better today , we were looking forward to today's hunt since no rain yet this will make the hunt easier and more enjoyable.

Again we headed to the same place,, We didn't wanna go anywhere else ! should We ? after seeing many fresh signs and tracks it would be dumb to even consider that !

We walked for an hour from our last ridge and now we see tracks all over, it was unreal how many tracks and signs were in this place, my friends and I we were very excited , knowing that this could be it, but we didn't wanna have high hopes cause We've been in places and situation like this before!! where You see many tracks but no bears !

Now it's 9 , here we are near a small lake, I got close to the shore to check for any bear tracks and there it was ... BIG FOOT
From the size of these tracks the Bear must be at least 7 feet tall !! man we were excited and to make things even better the signs were made few MINUTES AGO, right after that We saw the bear scat nearby still WARM.. I whispered to my friends : BIG FOOT IS HERE SOMEWHERE BE READY !!

The longer we waited the closer the sound is.
Then We heard something from behind, then to the left, then to the right , I looked toward my friends trying to get some answers from them but they didn't seems to know much more,, we got closer to each others and start whispering to each others,,what is going on ? bears,, Elk ,,? how many ? none of us had the answers .

after few minutes the braking in the bushes was moving toward the front of our directionand it's in one place now, located about 20 yards ahead, I told the guys I am gonna check it out and if I see Bears I will notify them, so be ready for anything.

I slowly start the stalk toward the noise and the closer i get the stronger the SMELL is,, the smell was like of a wet dog but 100 time stronger ,, there is something there , what ? I don't know but definitely something , I've been in this situation before and this smell is not strange to Me, the only thing I can think of right now is bears , but didn't want to confirm it yet.

Then I see something black moving, MAN THAT'S A BEAR WALKING not even 10 yards away! the guys were right behind me getting closer, then they stoped at once and one of them gave me the thumb up , and tried to say something to me , all I can get out of him was the last few words,, GET HIM !!

I looked back at the bear for the second time and saw a nice chocolate brown bear, my first guess was 300 # bear with a nice coat, so I aimed my gun right behind the right shoulder and fired at once...

silence fell right after the shot, and soon after the recoil I quickly looked back at where the bear was and saw it where it was few second ago but this time down and not moving!!

I looked back at my friends and saw big smiles on their faces, they were trying so hard to keep the excitement under control, then without any warning while I was about to walk toward the bear I saw a HUGE black bear runing between Us and the bear we shot, then another HUGE one,, GOD I yelled get them before they disapear but they were gone before any of us could even get the chance to aim at one of them !

We looked to the direction the bear went but nothing there, We knew we were not gonna find them, but hey at least we got one !
We walked toward the bear , it was a dry sow and the 2 male were trying to get lucky and be the next father of her offspring.

she was laying down and the blood was still coming out of the wound.
Nice coat, nice looking bear ! 346 # 6' 4" from head to toes . wow
