MAS 49/56

 

Picked up another old military surplus rifle recently this one is a French MAS model 49/56 re-chambered to 308. Just showing off the new girl. Range report to follow.

I don't know much about the older surplus stuff but I really like the looks of that one. What was the original chambering?

My local Cabela's has a couple of Egyptian Hakim rifles that look fun but they are priced about 3 times what I remember them going for when they all hit the market a long time back.

7.5 mm

 These were origially chambered in 7.5x54mm (aka 7.5 MAS or 7.5 French).  It is similar to the 308.

What makes the MAS 49/56 interesting to me is that it is incredibly simple internally. 

I haven’t seen any semi automatics (except small caliber direct blowback actions) with fewer moving parts.
