well ive scouted and i hung my stand in an awsome location ive cleared shooting lanes and even set up a salt lick. theres only one more thing making the shot. IVe practiced with my bow out to twenty yards but im most comfortable within 15 ive practiced on three D targets with broadheads and almost every thing else. i set up my stand so i would have a ten or 12 yard shot at a feeding deer. how do i get over buck fever? last year while shot gun hunting i saw a deer and i think i pointed the gunt at it but for some reason i fogot to shoot, or something i just froze. Also i shoot instinctivley with a recurve and ive never taken a deer with a bow or a gun.
how do i get over buck fever?
Hope and pray that you never do !!!!
Make sure that everything that happens while hunting is deliberate and well thought out, this includes making the shot. Make a mental "check list" of things to do before, during and after the shot and actually go thru that list.
Most importantly never lose that excitement of seeing a Buck...when you lose that, then its all over and you may as well just work thru the season.
train urself to follow a few simple steps, make it as mechanical as possible #1 determin if the animal is a shooter #2 make an accurate yardage estimate #3pick a small spot on the animal as your target, like a small patch of hair over the vitals,(many hunters who get buck fever end up shooting at the animal in general)take your shot.If you train urself to follow these steps it may help you keep the adrenaline to a managable level. ![]()
JTapia and Nevadahntr said it right follow nevada's checklist as long as it works for you.
But most importantly as JTapia said never ever ever try to lose the feeling of when that deer walks out. Even when a fawn or little button head walks out I get excetied just to know deer are there. Granted when the shooter walks out it is a lot different feeling but it's still there. I've always been told that if when a deer walks into view and you don't get that feeling you might as well lay your gun down and walk out of the woods and go home cause it's all over; it will never be the same.
thanx guys maybe i worded the question wrong i just wanted to know how to keep it under control so i dont miss and wound an animal. ![]()
Oh well in that case practice, practice, practice is the answer ![]()

BINGO !!! Well put bnow.
I believe that "Buck Fever" is an involuntary reaction caused by the appearence of someting that you have worked so hard for, sat and imagined all sorts of grandure about, lost sleep over 'cause of the excitement and just plain ole disbelief that you have actually seen what you are seeing. Probably nothing you can do to stop it other than do as bnow has said until making the shot becomes second nature...instinct, if you will.
Don't become so involved in trying to not get Buck Fever that you lose the excitement of the hunt and the thrill of viewing something so incredibly beautiful up close or worse yet, bring on a case of the fever by worrying so much about it.
Relax and practice, practice and practice more then relax.
Once you've determined its a shooter, DON'T look at the antlers. Pick your spot, wait and practice good form. Even if you feel you're unsteady and shaking you probably aren't.
Don't think about it too much.
Buck fever, what a sweet thing
, honestly its one thing i look forward getting, no matter how big they are, just the fact they are there. Good luck and enjoy! patients!
Think steak allways works for me!
dont concentrate on antler size, but on making a good clean kill. When you focus on the size of the rack you get distracted.
