Mainland Moose

Does anyone find it funny that there are no Moose in Nova Scotia just in Cape Breton but all kinds of Moose in New Brunswick. The same land but no Moose. Do you suppose they know where the border is?

Also, if they want to increase the moose population in mainland Nova Scotia then they will have to introduce the moose from Cape Breton into the Mainland Moose herd. They keep saying they don't want to mix the population but if they don't hurry and do something there won't be any mainland moose of any kind left.

Who cares if a moose is half mainland and half whatever as long as it is a moose.

Welcome to BGH.
There ARE mainland moose in Nova Scotia , but in low numbers, thus on the endangered list. The only area of the province that is "holding its own" is in a part of Cumberland County I believe. In Pictou County, where I live, there are only about 25 mainland moose, I can remember when there were hundreds.
The moose in The Cape Breton Highlands were imported decades ago from Alberta, not quite the same critter as the mainland moose.

Once again Welcome to BGH . Thumbs up

On extremes like that I think they should atleast take a few into captivity and do some tests to get them fluctuating again.why dont they breed them in captivity when something like this happening to bring the population back up do you guys know? If they dont take it into account soon you might be one moose pop less. I wonder why they are dying off?

Probably a couple of reasons:
One being the parasite that lives with the deer population but is deadly to moose & destroying the moose habitat. Moose like a fairly large wilderness area to survive compared to the deer. It would be very difficult to find an area of Pictou County for example where you could enter the woods and walk in a straight distance for a half mile without hitting a road of some sort or a woods operation in progress...

Why is the deer pop large where the moose are dying? That seems to be happening here the deer are flourishing and I wouldnt be surprised if they pushed the moose further.Hope not though sure love my moose huntin.

Here's an article that gives a good perspective on the Nova Scotia mainland moose:
http://www.cpawsns.org/moose/whymoosematter.html

The Nova Scotia government, in their wisdom, allowed for example, The large Liscombe Game Sanctuary to be clear cut from one end to the other(had a great moose population and habitat). That's just one screw-up. There were and are hundreds taking place as we speak.
Bottom line is that the mainland moose IS NOT comming back, plain and simple, and all the roads to recovery, now planed to be paved with good intentions, is just a laugh, unfortunately that's the way it is. sad indeed.
Deer on the other hand love living in town , any place with a few trees/bushes, something to call home.

Very sad hopefully It isnt the end I always wanna think the best with things like that. It is sad indeed what these logging ops do to some animals and they dont even stop when they know they are harming the enviroment.
