MAD BULL

I have a problem and could use some help.
I have been chaseing this 5x something bull sence opening day on the coast of oregon.
I found this single bull and he responded to a cow call , I saw him and what a monster. now that I have a week to go and all I can get this bull to do is grunt back at me regardless of the call I use , what is the GRUNT telling me?
I have been into his home (liveing room) left cow urin called him and had him smacking his lips but he never came into the open I have descented and sprayed with the pee but he just wont come out . This was the first time I went up the mountain to look for him although he has been there every day sence it opened.
so the question
what is the grunt aboput?
how should I call this beast? cow or bull?
please help this is my last five days

I know absolutely nothing about elk hunting. This in mind, a couple a white tail tricks may work. You said this was a beautiful animal so my guess is that he thinks so as well. He probably doesn't have a problem with the ladies but he may have a problem with another stud sliding in his turf. Use a bull call to get him up for the challenge. A big male in any species(elk, deer,... human Yes ) thinks he is bullet-proof and will come looking for a fight. Use the cow call a little just to let your bull think this new guy has a couple of willing ladies. My guess is if you do your part he will come. Keep in mind this works for deer but I have never hunted elk before.

once an elk has you figured out and you leave human scent around he will keep his distance and I doubt he will lower his guard for some time, maybe take a break and give him a chance to calm down.

bulls dont want to fight if you are sure its a lone bull then cow call with a estreus cow call. you can make him jealous with cow calls and then a whimpy bugle use a cow call diaphram and bugle without a tube just cup your hands and dont make it sound big and bad make him think you are a puss.

trick him

I would do some cow calling and maybe a few whimpy bugle's , you want to sound like a spike or a small bull. A big bull does not want to fight if he thinks your a big bull, he will be to worried that a bigger bull will take his cows from him, but a smaller bull or a spike with a few cows, he might think that he can come in and take your cows easily. Good luck .

When he grunts at you he is just letting you know where he is hoping a cow might come over or something, try putting a spot and stalk on him if he sounds like hes not moving, and use a hyper cow call. Good luck with him and keep your eyes open in your stalk he will be looking for you.

Are the elk in that area rutting very hard yet? Things are just starting to pick up with the elk rut where I hunt at in Western Washington. If possible I would try stalking in on him and bugling right in his ear. That grunt you are hearing might be his assembly call for his cows, telling them to head for higher ground, while he stands by to investigate the situation. If the elk are rutting pretty hard right now, some excited cow calling mixed with the excited buggling of a sattelite bull might entice him, the main thing is to sound like a young testosterone filled bull traveling through the woods running his mouth and parading his small group of cows around providing an easy target for a mature bull.

The best year I have ever had... I tried a lot of the tricks you advised me on and all of the ones I tried worked ,I didnt get a shot but I have some storys to tell and remember for the rest of my life! Thanks to all who helped.
He will be ready for me next year and with what I know now ...LOL meat in the deep freez!!!!
He went mad on a stick beating a tree, that with cow calls he came a running . I found him up off the floor of the gully I was in ,he answered a cow call then I walked down the path picked a big stick up and beat up a tree, doing a hot cow call , he made the madest call I have ever heard. The next thing I knew he was 20 yards or so away grunting at me . I got some hair off the tree he was going nuts on .After he sented a friend that was with me , we saw him and 3 other bulls going up the mountain ,it was just to cool! Ill get some pictures of the gully he is in and post them by next weekend, best I can do ....what a year! thanks again for all of the help
