Lucky Week

Well opening week in Kentucky has just ended and we sure enjoyed it! We had seen some nice bucks on our trail cam, one brute of a 10 point in particular. At 10 minutes before SR on opening morning, my son-in-law whacked that big 10 point as he walked along the edge of the huge swamp we hunt adjacent to. Dropped him in his tracks with his M77 using 180gr core-lokts.

A few days later on a nice cold 23* morning, after I'd seen 4 or 5 deer already, I heard a deer approaching from directly behind me. This fella walked by, very close to my stand and I shot him hard quartering away as he walked almost directly away. He took off, and knowing he was hit good, I continued shooting until he dropped about 110 yards away. Looks like those couple running shots failed to connect, however.... confused?

He was a huge bodied buck, must have been about 225-250 live weight. It took me a good while to drag him out by myself and I had to call a Buddy to come help me get him up into the back of my truck. I was shooting a Marlin .444S and LeverEvolution 265gr ammo.

Best of luck to all out there and we will now be switching our sights to Tennessee M/L and rifle!

Thank you Sir! I can tell you that mine sure dragged like a "hog" and it took me a good while to get him out by myself. Thank goodness the area is very flat!

Hey Sean, Congrats on your harvest! Glad to hear those bullets are working so well for you. I did take one Tennessee buck with another box of those same loads. Now we have Tennessee rifle to look forward to! Yes

Thank you, we can only wish that Tennessee rifle allows us some continued luck, but not betting on that! Whistling

Great job on your buck. I

Great job on your buck. I have seen a lot of big bucks at our KY butcher this year. Lots of good antler growth. Tn, what part of KY do y'all hunt?

where

Thank you. We hunt right over the Kentucky border in Logan County. Our lease is close enough to the state line that this could have actually have been a Tennessee deer on a sight-seeing trip! Yes

One of the funniest things I've seen in years was a few years ago when I was driving on my way out to hunt one afternoon and spied a decent 8 point standing in the middle of a field, perhaps 150 yards from the road. I stopped to get a bit better look and as soon as I did, he looked my way, switched directions and streaked towards the Tennessee line, some 300-400 yards away. The Tennessee gun season was not open at that time. lol

I always comment now whenever I tell that story that in rural Kentucky, most deer must know to get worried whenever a truck slows to get a closer look! What??
