Love is in the air and the moose are on the move

I went bird hunting this weekend (excellent year for grouse in NW Ontario) and saw plenty of moose too. Saw two separate young bulls, and with a soft cow call had them both walking towards the truck. It seems I bit early for the rut but I guess love is in the air, anyone else starting to see the bulls wandering around looking for girlfriends already. Sorry no pics I forgot the camera!!!

The rut starts slowly , peaks and falls, so to speak. The success you have with calling depends greatly on the bull/cow ratio. ie Three or four large bulls and a dozen cows in the same area and you will not call one of the big guys in, he will not leave his cow. But he may "become single for a day" when the cow no longer needs him, and at that time, you may be able to get him in with a "seductive call of lonelineess".
The young bulls will take what they can get !

Love is in the air and the moose are on the move

I was in Denali a couple days ago and watched some of the biggest bulls I'd ever seen courting cows. At one point my kids and I watched with binos as a bull put on a show for a cow. It didn't take long, though -- in only a couple minutes Bullwinkle was in the saddle and the family show was over.

I drove up to the house last night and there was a cow, calf, and a young bull in the front yard. They eventually trotted off down the street, with the bull in tow. As he chased after her, that poor bull was making the most pathetic whines I'd ever heard. "Baby! Come back! It's not the size of the horns, it's how you use 'em!"

The rut is on the down swing when rifle season opens in Northern Ontario (WMU 40) and we still have had success calling in bulls. They do tend to be a big younger, but it makes for real good meat.
