Hey guys, hows it going.

Like the subject says I'm from LA. I've been hunting all my life. My problem is in Louisiana we have leases or private land that we usually hunt. I'm trying to find out what''s the situation like up here. I'm not that far from the Adirondack Mountains, and I would really like to try and take a black bear this year. I haven't hunted on public land since i was 7 or 8 years old. I guess I'm just trying to get as much info as possible on the hunting regulations around here. I looked on the New York State fish and game website but i couldn't find any info on how and where it is legal to hunt. Hope someone here can point me in the right direction. Thanks. Any advice is much appreciated. Brick Wall,)

First off welcome to BGH.NET. Second welcome to CNY Thumbs up

In the "ADK's" you can hunt all of the thousands of acres of state land. It is vast and deciding where you want to hunt and then scouting those areas out takes time. The type of hunting you want to do will have something to do with it. New York does not allow hunting bears with bait or dogs so it is just you and the bear in his living-room. Do you want to hike back into a wilderness area and camp out? (all NY state land in the "park" is foreverwild so driving into the woods is very restricted) Do you want to stay in a motel or do you want to stay in a state campsite as a base campsite. There are also guiding outfits that work in the "dacks".

I hunt the central Adirondack's in the Tupper/Cranberry Lake's area. Game densitys are not high as it is "big woods" hunting but it is a very rewarding experience taking an animal there.

Welcome jdanos,
Bear is right when he says there are thousands of acres of state land to hunt in New York State. Living in Syracuse and if you bowhunt Montazuma Wildlife Preserve will on occasion open that area to hunt for bowhunters only. I know there are plenty of state lands to hunt but you need to check with the state to see where they are. If you have the time to spend the Adirondacks offer good buck hunting but hunting is hard because of the terrain and deer are few and far between but usually when you see a buck, it's a good one. Bear spoke of Tupper Lake area, which isn't really all that far from you, is good deer and bear hunting. I was raised on Tupper Lake and one of my favorite spots to hunt are Horseshoe Lake which is a forever wild area not far from tupper. I took as of this date the largest black bear I have ever taken there. The Biggest buck I have ever taken was on the Cold River Flow at the end of Long Lake. Your not far from any of those areas. Good Luck this deer season, it's not far away.

A couple other questions for y'all. How's the process on bear tags up here is it a lotto or do you get one when you get your license? Also, if I am fortunate enough to take a bear this season, will there be a taxidermist I can take it to to get a nice rug out of it? I'll probably go scout those places out Sunday being it's my first day off, thanks for those tips fellas

Your bear tag will come with your deer licence. Big Game opens at defferent times depending where you hunt so be sure to read your regulation book. 2010 licences went on sale yesterday along with a lotto type system for doe tags. I'm not sure about taxedermits in your area but I'm sure there are.
Check with someone who hunts or knows your area they should know.
Goodluck this year

Yup buy a big game licence and you get a bear tag. There is an early season for bear that starts in Sept in the northern zone but you need your (unused) bear tag from your licence from the season before. (NY is kind of weird the environmental year, hunting fishing etc. starts and ends on October 1st?)

Just remember that as you drive along anywhere you see state land you can stop and hunt.

Welcome Jdanos, The Adirondack's are a good choice for bears. You are late for this year but next year around the third week in August there is a NYS Black bear forum .It is in Woodgate NY at the White Otter fish and game club. It is a nice day full of information all about Black Bears. You will want to hunt for bears around there food source. Apples, beechnuts, black cherries etc.
I like Essex county for bears , the deer population in very low in the high peaks area but when you do see one it is usually a very good one. Lots of state land . There are some clubs / leases up there also that you can make a great base camp from. Keep a close eye on the weather up there . Even in the early season it can change overnight and get very nasty. Happy hunting.

i would say if you can, finding a guide would be your best bet. There is a total of 6 million acres in the park so its not easy to Just walk in find a bear shoot it and walk out
