Looking for Predator/ Varmit rifle reccomendations

I am seeking advice on what is overall best predator and or varmit rifle and caliber.  Im set up pretty good for Tennessee big game rifles but am getting pretty interesting in predator hunting.  I was home in leave from Afghanistan hunting deer with a good friend, and we had a buck run off by a coyote.  So I decided to look into the coyote hunting a little closer.  There is nothing more thrilling than hunting something that is hunting you, as I have learned on several occasions here in Afghanistan.  I will be home for good in January and plan on adding coyote hunting as a new hobby.

I don't know if you are sick

I don't know if you are sick of them, being in the military, but M-4/AR-15 type guns make great Varmit rifles, and the .223 is an okay coyote round.  You might want to move up a little in caliber for the yotes, but not necessarily.  If you are looking to get away from a military type rifle, then look for a good 22-250, or a .243.  Both are great calibers for those types of critters.

You read my mind.

I am burnt out on the AR platforms but have read that alot of people are using them for varmit and predators.  I am leaning towards to .243 but what is the in and exit wound like on a yote, can you still salvage the fur?

Look into the Savage Model 10 Predator which you can get from 204 Ruger up to 243 with 223 and 22-250 in between those. It was developed to be a coyote specific hunting rig in regard to balancing barrel thickness, weight, for the best of both worlds in terms of accuracy of a heavier varmint rig and lightness of a walking predator gun. I have one in 22-250 and love it, it's smoking accurate, a breeze to carry. The detachable box magazine is convenient when loading unloading when getting in and out of vehicles. I believe the latest models are even upgraded some.

In terms of being fur friendly that is largely up to the bullet you decide to use, especially with the faster or larger calibers. The 204 and 223 would be the most fur friendly IMO. But, you can find a fur friendly bullet with any of the other calibers. Check out the Savage I'm sure you'd like it.

Cheers!

i would say the 22-250 is the

i would say the 22-250 is the best its flat shooting and its a vary small round so that it will not damage any meat or any of the fur

Im glad I created this forum

Thanks for the replies.  I have never even considered the 22-250 before, never crossed my mind. But with all the positive feedback on it. It is now on my short "research list".   Thanks again fellas.

One other weapon to consider

One other weapon to consider would be the Remington 870 12 ga shotgun shooting 0000 buck shot.  A lot of times the coyote is moving and doesn't provide you a standing shot and that shot if you do get it needs to be a fast one.
