Looking for a good Colorado (1st rifle) unit to draw a (2nd choice) Bull tag without using points.

Hello,

I am trying to find a unit that we could draw a 2nd choice bull tag in Colorado for the 1st rifle season.

Is this possible or should we just do the OTC 2nd season hunt.

I have 3 points and wish to keep accumulating them. My freind has none, never been elk hunting.

I don't understand the DNR recaps very well.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks, Jay.

1st season is popular,

You only have a few options if you want a bull or either sex tag:  21/22/30/31/32, 18/181, 15, 28, 41/42/421/52/421/411, 54, 82 plus a few others.

If you look at cow tags, your options open up considerably.  If you only want bull tags, and you want more options, then look at 4th season.  Good tags and popular units are much easier to draw.

The options?

Exbiologist,

Thanks for the intel.

I've never hunted these units. Which areas do you like?

I take that back, I did hunt in 28 and 37 once. I was unsuccessful and found the terrain rather rough for this flatlander.

Thanks, Jay

how about I tell which ones I don't like

I sell that information, so I'll just tell you that 18/181 and 28 are among the worst choices available.

I like the other options.  15 isn't super rugged, but has a pretty good bit of wilderness.  54 and 82 are super super super rugged.  So if 28 and 37 kicked your butt, these will be tougher.  41/42/421/411/52/521 are probably the least rugged.  Of the Grand Mesa units, only 521 has wilderness (and that one is pretty gnarly).  The Book Cliffs, Roan Cliffs and Piceance units aren't too rugged but it's kind of a road hunt.  So pick your poison.

Thanks, again. Any Intel. on 41/42/421/411/52/521?

Thanks again. It's tough pioneering new territory. It's fun though, especially when the plan comes together.

I was invited out to unit 62 for the past two archery seasons. Last year I was lucky enough to harvest a great 300" bull on the last (my 8th) morning of the 2010 season.

My hats off to the "solesearcher" for all the help and hospitality. I'll try to attach a photo.

Does anyone have any intel. to share or experience in these units?
