it all depends on how much your willing to spend. i know from personal experience the stevens 200 is a fine rifle for the money and i'm hearing good things on the mossberg atr. the remington 700 sps isnt a bad price either if your able to spend a bit more money....just remember to save money for a good scope....DO NOT TRY TO SAVE YOUR PENNYS WITH THE SCOPE!! the scope is a vital part of your firearm....the only link between you and your quarry....good luck choosing Thumbs up

The mossberg 100atr is a great gun, I have one in 270 shoots just over 1" groups (that was just after it was sighted in for the first time so it may have gotten better). for under $300 you don't mind taking it out in the rain, just make sure the bolt handle is down when you pull the trigger Brick Wall,)

good choice on calibre too
good luck

Thanks for the warm welcome Don,... Thumbs up

I really like this site and hope I can help others out when ever I can, I've been around the block so to say when it comes to hunting, fishing, and reloading.

I also have a excellent reloading/ballistics software program that I've been using now for 3-4 years (QuickLoad) that saves me so much time and $$ in developing new loads it has paid for itself 5x over. Yes

If anyone needs a hand in that area,... don't be afraid to ask me !

I second what Western Hunter says. I personally hunt hogs, goats and axis deer (none of which are particularly large). Yet, I know guys who use a 300 win mag. The gun I find myself carrying all the time is a Savage 11GL in 7mm-08. The recoil is a little less than the 30-30 but it shoots flatter.

You may want to consider a single shot from Thompson Center, that way if you want a different caliber, you can just buy the barrel and forend. Another alternative is tha Savage line of bolt actions. Because of the barrel nut design, the caliber can be changed with relative ease and is something you can do yourself.

I think it is very important that you know yourself. Can you shoot a rifle with heavier recoil without flinching? I think a less powerful round that you can confidently shoot accurately is much better than a super magnum that you shoot and pray the bullet goes where you want it.

I would go with a Rem 700 in .308 The 308 will do anything the 30-06 will do with less recoil.
