Looking for a an all around gun

I am looking to purchase a hunting rifle primarily for whitetail deer of North Carolina, but I am highly interested in future hunting for bigger game in Alaska and Canada, are there any good calibers that can meet both of these needs so I dont have to buy but one gun?

Remington .270 model 7600, topped with a gold ring (leupold)
Some will say bigger, some will say smaller if you can shoot good. But most will say top it off with a gold ring.

I have used a 30-06 for the last 30+ years to hunt the whitetail deer "black bear, boar also" in NC- I have hunted the entire state and this rifle has done the job- be it up close in thick woods to the open fields of the coastal region 'yardage shots'
also it is powerful enough to take down ELK Bear, even Moose

If this is your first big caliber rifle
look at the features of each rifle you are going to consider-

my choice was a Winchester Model 70-
30-06 cal.
just retired my old 30-06 35yrs+
24" barrel
3 position safety
light weight

I like this cal.- ammo is everywhere and getting cheaper by the year
has great ballistics

Leupold optics a given!!!!!!!

I wound up buyin a Winchester Model 70 .300, i found it at Walmart for $398 and it came with a Simmons 3x9 scope, I will get another scope before season starts and I'm considering a Nikkon Monarch but I've looked at some Leupolds.

great gun- have one of these myself-took 2 deer with it last year in Tenn."trying it out"
ballistics about even with the 30-06
300 Win Mag vs 300 WSM there is a 0.010 inch difference @ 300 yds
here is a web site you can look up ballistics on different gr. ammo and compare

I agree on the 300 Winchester Magnum for open plains and long range shots because you can reach out and touch something and nock it for a flip when it hits it.

But a good all round cartridge would be a 25-06 or a 30-06 which has plenty of long range capabilitys.

I would also add that if you are wanting to hunt alaskan big game like Moose or grizzlys I would want something larger than a 270 cartridge.

7mm Rem Mag is a good all around hunting rifle for North America, the only game I would want somthing bigger for is Grizzly,so unless you enjoy the kick of a 300 and your not goin griz hunting the 7 Mag is great.

I just picked up a Savage Weather master 270, and got a Winchester model 70 30-06 from my old man for my b-day. The 30-06 came with a Simmions 3X9, which I'll leave on until I find a reason to get rid of it. The Savage on the otherhand is gettnig a Sightron 3X9-42. I just need to save the extra $200 of play money (I just shot my load on a Buckshot Magnum climber stand). Damn near impossible with the new baby and a house to take care of. Do you all think these calibers are too close? If I got rid of one of them, which would you reccomend? I'm thinking the 30-06 and going with a .338 or something.

Remington model 700 bdl ss dm in a 7mm Rem Mag. with a 3x10 variable scope, either a simmons or a leopold, you will never have to purchase another rifle unless you plan on going after cape buffalo or rhino.
