long shot

His Post was saying further than a 7mm ultramag could reach...I would generally assume that meant more than 400 as would anyone else

long shot

When I think "long shot". I'm thinking farther than the point blank range of the firearm. Which is typically beyond 300 yds. in a high power rifle.

A long shot for a hunting cartridge would be, in my opinion, 300yds. That's about the max point blank range is for many cartridges, less for more than most realize. Beyond that shooting skills need to be improved. For target's, a 22 LR is claimed to be dangerious to 1 1/4mi. If it's dangerious there, it has to reach there. so for target purposes long range is a very different matter depending on who's pulling the trigger. A 22LR and a 338x416 Rigby Imp will both make a hole in paper at 1 1/4 mi, at least, if the shooter has the skills to do it.

A cartridge that has the ability to deliver a killing blow at say 500yds in the hands of a 100yd shooter, become's quite useless, and dangerious. Likewise a cartridge that might appear under powered at 500yds in the hands of a very compitent shooter becomes very deadly.

I think for the purposes of hunting, anything at or beyond 300yds should be concidered long range.

AGREED! Some consider the ole '06 to be outdated these days but those of us whom have shot it for many years....know that it's quite deadly at extreme range! In past conflicts.....there have been many of the enemy that if they could be brought back to life and asked about their demise they'd say....."I got zapped by a GI shooting the 30/06"!

Interesting thread. Most posters here have it right. Even if you possess the kit and the skill...no experienced hunter would take a long shot at game. A long shot to me is over 200yds, even at predators.

I've competed at up to 900m with the Royal New Brunswick Rifle Assoc. in F-Class for many years. Attended the first F-Class Worlds at the Connaught ranges in Ottawa. And have done quite well all around. I'm on a bit of a hiatus right now as my wife and I are raising a family of three children.

Although I possess the kit, my skill is probably rusty. Never-the-less, when I was at the top of my game, I would rarely take a shot at an animal over 100yds. It's called having respect.
