There's a difference between suffering fools and being deliberately offensive.

Nonetheless, I think the advice for hatchcock to check out the "shooting skills" thread is a good one. Anyone who has to ask what rifle they should buy for long distance shooting is very obviously not ready for long distance shooting! If you have not practiced enough to be absolutely CERTAIN that you can keep your shots within an animal's vital zone at whatever range you are considering, then you should NOT be considering taking the shot!

To specifically answer the question, a 7mm UM is capable of making shots farther than any person has any business taking shots at a game animal. Take it to the range and see if you can keep all of your shots (not most, but ALL!) within the diameter of a paper plate at 300 yards. I'd be willing to bet that you can't (very few riflemen can--far fewer than the number who IMAGINE that they can!). And if you can't then you have no business at all taking shots at that range.

Please be a responsible hunter. Good luck.

My statement wasn't 'deliberately' offensive! It was absolute fact.....and I'll stand by my statement!

It makes no difference whether I"ve been here 3 days or 30 years! The mere fact that ANYONE whom thinks that just because they have purchased a rifle that's (possibly) capable of shooting effectively at long range and that this alone gives them the capability to be skilled enough to use it effectively......needs to be 'shocked' back into delving into real world 'reality'! And in the final analysis....I"m not so certain that "Hathcocks' post was anything but a 'gig' to draw statements regarding what I consider a 'nutty post' to begin with!!

I agree with doghouse, if you want to make long shots Call for fire. Once you have the target pinpointed, fire for effect. neener!

As far as a gun to make long shots, if you don't know what gun to use, you shouldn't be making those shots. There are guns out there that will make the long shots effectively and if you don't already know that, you don't need to know.

Now Now boys...Simmer down....Hammer....RH was correct in his post and you know it...you yourself are not a fan of long range shots on game animals ESPECIALY by those not well rehersed in the art. He was a little blunt and rash but was dead on to the pont. RH...We do try to be a little nicer here at BGH....We dont know if this is just some 17 year old kid posting this or what...You can be an effective poster and get your point accross without diliberate insults. Yes you are completely correct in the fact that NOONE should try it if they even have to ASK but if you could please control the insulting tone it would be appreciated. If the Poster had gotten rude or was deliberatly trying to pick ,like another Poster we have in here that shall not be named but most of us know who Im talking about, then yeah Have at it. But untill then just try to get the point in without the insults.

Thanks

In my opinion the MAIN INSULT was to the intellect of those upon this forum that 'Hathcock' figured were dumb enough to follow the lead on his question!!

Mr Mulhern,

While I appreciate your input in these shooting matter's and understand where your comming from I also know that it is not necessary to insult the intelligence of anyone on this site. That there are some not as well schooled in shooting as yourself, I believe most are reasonable and can understand position's without being insulted. Your attack was unwarrented and totally out of line! Do you look down your nose at everyone like that? I have a hard time understanding why some people that appear to have so much to offer prefer to instead to offer contempt for other's they claim to be less well schooled. I find myself suddenly unimpressed with anything you've written here, a fact I'm also certain you don't care about.

I can direct you to several other site's that do tolerate your manner of replying to post's you don't except personnely. Having your own range, a nice reloading set up and a SUPPOSED ability to shoot at long range does not give you the right to insult ANY member here! Neither does SUGGESTING to having been friends with Carlos Hathcock! You must be a lonely man!!!!!!!!!! I know you might not believe this but, the member's here have not been sitting up night's awaiting your arrival.

And this is about as upset as I ever get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
