My son is a better hunter than I am. He shoots about a dozen arrows three to four times a week. He gets on top of my garage and shoots from there also. He packs his hunting clothes in a plastic bag with some leaves and crushed acorns. He doesn't realy use cover sent but he does use sent eliminator. Most importantly he can stay in his stand for the whole day. He knows that after not seeing a deer for three or four hours there may be one around the corner. He remaind positive and excited. I think the passion for the hunt is the most important...................Good Luck to Ya, lets keep eachother informed

If I remember correctly there might be 1 or two spots where bow hunting is the only thing permitted; places very close to residential homes. Make sure you;ve obtain your Access Permit : many guys just jump on without it and get fined by DEC. ; the check station is closed most of October and is only open on SUN, TUE AND THURS AFTER 2:00 PM.........Last season in October hunters were parked almost 2 hours before sunrise until the DEC started patrolling in the morning and ticketing cars......so becareful........Once Nov. comes around the check station is open daily and for certain spots you have to check in every morning.....many areas south of the LIE there is no check in required but check with the ridge station for more information.......During the week you can call the day before and get an early out pass which allows you to check in and get out to the field before everyone else. Make sure you have a plan "B" nothing worse than the morning of Oct.1 you finding another car in your spot! you'll find less archers in late Nov and Dec when the hunting gets good! Good Luck I hope the info was helpful.....see you out there!

It will be my first year with a bow now, thinking of Rocky Point and Otis. Is it hard to get parking in October for bow hunting? and it might sound strange but do you need to actually be parked there to be hunting? I was planning on getting dropped off in the morning and picked up later by a friend who works nearby - or is that breaking the DEC rules?

Good question huntingfad. The DEC guys probably doen't even know the answer to that question. They say that you must park in a designated spot. Prior to Nov. 1st you need an access permit and a land use permit. But sometimes even that changes, last year thay changed that date to around Nov 15 due to man power shortage. My guess would be that if you don't have a vehicle you can get dropped off anyplace. I'm going to have to do some research on that one. I like to know all of the rules so that even the DEC guys can't mislead me.

I had to work but my son and his friend went out for the day. Saw a doe early and then no activity until about 4:00. He had a doe at 18 yds and a small 8 pointer at same distance. Shortly after a bigger 8 pointer but since it is the first day he passed.

You sound more knowledge than a lot of the DEC LI Sportsman! I don't blame you wanting to know all the rules, I have a similar mindset!

As luck turns out I will be parked there now, however I didn't know that I need a land use permit!

So you do the hunting course, the bow course, then you get a license, then you get a season access permit, put that in your car, wear the back tags whilst your hunting - and this is before Nov 1st when you need to get the daily permit!

Is a land use permit necessary for bow hunting in October in Rocky Point before in addition to the above? (and where on earth do you get them!)
