I think that there are more things factored in than just the weather. They have to reproduce and they will.
Do you use any calls? I have been at Sarnoff and have not seen much.
Out this morning, oct 26, saw a slammer! First good deer I've seen since February! Up until now just small 4 and 6 pts. They have started trolling for does, and the does are getting a bit spooky towards the bucks. It's on! Good luck, I'll be back out tomorrow to see if the big guy is back.
Hi all,
I'm new to bowhunting and will be trying to take my bow out sometime soon in the Rocky Pt area. I've rifle and shotgun hunted upstate, but have never gotten anything. Since then, I've studied a little more, but unfortunately have not been able to do any scouting. I've also had several work and family issues over the last month that have kept me from getting out there until now.
Would anyone be able to help me with a couple things I've been thinking about before I stumble out there?
- To hunt off Whiskey rd, do I need to check in or reserve a space, or can I just pull up at 5:30, park, and hike in?
I have the access and parking permits already.
- Without scouting and being fairly inexperienced, should I proceed, or wait until I can find someone to help me out? I'm figuring even if I just get out there with no clues and can be silent and scent-free in a tree, my odds are better than if I don't at all.
- What's the off-peak hour for travel through the woods? I was thinking of getting in the tree by 6, and out of the woods to go to work around 9:30a.
- How crowded is the area this time of year? Should I expect a car in every spot and a hunter ever 200 yards, or is it a little better than that? Anyone have days where they don't see any other hunters?
- Am I allowed to carry a shotgun for turkey and a bow for deer when the two seasons overlap? The hunting guide is ether not clear or I can't find that reg.
One thing I certainly don't want to do is ruin another guys hunt. I'm not sure if I should get there at 5:30, or maybe wait til 5:45 so I'm not taking someone's spot that's actually done the scouting and work in the area.

Dude ...... you are being to nice. Trust me you will see people out walking around . Last year i was at otis pike location 36 and saw deer but also ran into 5 other guys and there dogs bird hunting. That is the only bad thing. Get out as early as you can. You always have to check in for rocky point and otis pike ( those are the 2 spots ive hunted sofar.) If you can make a res. the night before ..... do it. The earlier the better. let everyone else kick them up to you. And not one person ( well maybe a couple ) would be worried about your scouting and work put in ...so don't lose sleep over it !
Yeah, I guess so, but being a noob on Long Island hunting, I want to be as courteous as possible, cause I need as much courtesy as possible...
I hear ya man, trust me i like to be the nice guy too. When a hunter walks past you at 15 yards sees you and doesn't aknowledge you there. Nice goes out the window if he didn't have a shotgun! Right now i just can't wait to get out there, otis pike spot 36 is good but you will see birdhunters.
The last couple of years, if you hunted south of the LIE you didn't have to go to the check station first. All spots north of the LIE you must go to the check station (Nov. and Dec.) and get an assigned spot. There are some spots that you can reserve the day before and get an early out. Just try to avoid the pheasant hunting spots, I think that the deer would have moved from those spots any way since the dogs and hunters cover alot of ground. Good luck.
Went out on sunday south of the l.i.e. seen a nice 8 point chasing does , looks like its starting to heat up a bit . good luck all.
My son and his friend went out to Rocky Point last week and stopped to have a friendly chat with a couple of guys getting ready to hunt. The two guys just ignored my son and his friend, didn't even make eye contact. If these two guys use this site, try to be kind to fellow hunters. There is no reason to be rude. When you need help or aid in the woods it will be another hunter who comes to your aid. My son is nicer than I am, he would still help you, me, not. Have met to many rude people in my life and am sick of them. What goes around comes around.
