Lightweight Rifle

I have been giving thought to adding a lightweight rifle to the collection.
Rifles weighing according to catolg data, 7.5-9lbs seem to be about average.

Do you own a lightweight?
How much does it weigh?
What make an cal is it?

My first initial thought was a Kimber Montana 308, but after handling one at a shop, it is too light for me. I believe catolog weight info to be about 5.3 or 5.5 lbs. Probably a dream to carry, but I found it tough to steady and hold.

I have a good source for a used Winchester Featherweight 30-06, catolog weight info is 7lbs. I am not really sure if this would make a real difference in carrying compared to the 06, Rem BDL I already own. Cat data is 7.25-7.5 I believe.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Four seasons ago I bought a 22" barreled Browning Micro Hunter in 300wsm. With scope strap and a full magazine it weighs in at just over 8 lbs. Hold well for me. Carries well. Shoot exceptionally well. Felt recoil is no more than my 30-06, maybe less.
Browning makes the same rifle in 308win with a 20" barrel and a bit less weight. I almost walked out with the 308win but, couldn't resist the 300wsm.

Depends on what kind of caliber you are looking for and what sort of scope, if any, you'll be putting on it. I've got a 35 Whelen that was converted from a remington 700 mountain LSS that wieghed just over 6 pounds out of the box. The whelen barrel (#3 22 inches) was a little heavier and I added on a leupold scope, so it now weighs around 7.5 pounds. This is really pretty light weight for me. However, I've got a Ruger m77 Mark 2 frontier rifle in a 338 federal with a 16.5 inch barrel. It weighed roughly 6.5 pounds out of the box. I put a 1.5-6x40x scope on it making it just over 7 pounds. Tough to get lighter than that with a decent sized cal, plus, you'll have to deal with extra recoil too.

My regular all-around hunting rifle is a Winchester M70 Featherweight in .270 Win. Lighter to carry than my Rem BDL in .30-06. Shoot only my max velocity 130 grain bullet reloads in it. It's a great handy hunter for me.

We have a Browning Micro-Hunter in 7mm-08. I'm not sure what the rig weighs in total with scope and all, but I think it is a pretty sweet shooter myself.
I believe the barrel is 20" long ; and even though I'm six foot with long arms I don't find it too small etc. myself.
I originally bought it for my son when he was smaller, but he is full grown now and still won't part with it. I only get to use it when he isn't going on a hunt with me, .... bummer..... ha ha.

I have a Remington 700 Cabela's MTN Guide in .308 (they also come in 7mm-08 and .243) and really like it. It weighs 5 3/4 lbs empty and with Talley Lightweights and a Leupold Ultralight it weighs a little more then 6 lbs.has a 22" barrel so it quick to fraw up and still very compact enough for long backpacking trips.
