This is legal....right?

Happy New Year

I am planning on taking my son out on Monday in Unit 20 to try and close the deal on a late season cow tag that he didn't fill in 3rd rifle. The regs on the late youth hunt seem pretty straight forward, just hunt in any of their listed units in their listed late season dates. Which for us, would work in the late Unit 20 hunt from Jan 12-23. This is fine right?

This is the first time doing the youth late season hunt.I just don't want to be tromping out there and get busted because I misunderstood the youth late season regs. Thanks for any feedback

If your boys original cow tag

If your boys original cow tag was for unit 20 then it is OK.

There are about 20 units west of Steamboat and in the Flat Tops where you wouldn't be able to hunt unless you had a tag for one of those units.

If you haven't already looked it is on page 4 of the guide book.

Good luck to your boy.

Late season youth cow tag

You first need to go get the tag stamped at the CPW office and then yes you should be able to hunt any open unit where there is still a season going on. "BUT" if it is a private land only season you must hunt on private land.

Good luck to your son !

Normal 0 false false

Aaron,

Here are the youth late season regulations, huntable units and dates:

 http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollectionDocuments/DOW/Hunting/BigGame/2012EligibleLateYouthElkHuntsrevised.pdf

It does not matter what unit you purchased the youth cow elk tag in you are eligible to hunt unit 20.

You do not have to turn in your cow tag only either sex tags.

I was hoping to get my 2 sons out to unit 20 on the 21st as well but do not know the area.  Do you have any insights you could share?

Larry

Thanks guys That is what I

Thanks guys

That is what I thought from page 4, the unfilled cow tag is fine for any blue unit.

Larry, this is my first time in Unit 20. I have driven around a couple times over this year looking for access, but it's new to me. I hear that without heavy snow to push them out of the park it can be tough. But, we've got the tag and the time so Lord willing we'll get something. I am also building up points to try and get a late season bull tag in 20 someday, so I figure I can use times like this to get more familiar with the unit. Good Luck

You're legal...... This year

You are totally legal for this year. After 7 years of this program and major abuses and no way to track the harvest and going way over harvest objective in numerous units, there will be a major overhaul for next year.  Essentially the Dow is having to get rid of several late seasons and will restrict youths to their original DAU, but necessarily GMU

How about we have a super

How about we have a super senior late hunt too? A youth can get around a lot better than us old farts.

I'm starting to resemble that comment. I actually still get around, it just takes a lot longer to get there and back.
